The scouts go for badges

Trails:

Friday - West Borden (unofficial 200)

Saturday - West Borden, FT209, FT202, FT201

Sunday - FT201, FT202

This past weekend was a backpacking goal for many of the scouts - 3days, 2nights, min 15miles, and three of the biggest requirements for 3 merit badges signed off.

Lazy kayaking

After doing some yardwork on Friday, I decided that I wanted to enjoy the weather and go kayaking down the local river. She had never been kayaking, or even in a kayak, so she was a little apprehensive. The only way I could convice her, was guarantee her a sit-on-top kayak...

The last time I had been down that river was at least 10 years ago, probably even longer, and then I went in a canoe.

So we called a local rental company, put some deposits down and were told when to show up for Sunday.

Scout Dayhike 7.11-7.12 2008

So, last month our troop attempted 10mi, but fell short by 3mi due to some nasty rain and a few scouts that just weren't ready. That's fine - they made it up this month, and some!

Scouts almost make 10mi

Saturday was the scout troop's planned 10mi hike toward their backpacking merit badge. It was the Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trial, which is a simple dayhike along the shores of Lake Martin in Alexander City, AL. Nothing too crazy, nothing too outstanding, but still 10mi in the Alabama heat/humidy was the goal.
