Payne Creek Dayhike w/ Wild South and Fresh Air Family

We took off work for the day and joined FAF and Janice Barrett from Wild South for a short hike down the brand new Payne Creek Trail. This trail is located on the Hwy 33 at the pullover just north of the Mims Recreation Area canoe launch/pullout at the top of the hill. After putting on some Deet repellent, we walked to the North end of the parking area and into the woods following the dirt road. After about 50 yards we veered right onto a trail blazed w/ small orange flags. The trail then ran to parallel a dry/seasonal streambed down toward Payne creek, after about 0.4 miles thr trail veers right to go down the canyon wall. The streams go off a 30 ft cliff and probably makes a nice waterfall after a good rain. The trail enters the canyon by a rock shelter by Payne Creek, the trail then goes downstream for about another 10th of a mile to a larger shelter, immediately below where the previous stream went off the cliff. The kids enjoyed finding wolf spiders, crawfish and lizards on the creek.  After a short snack, we returned on the same trail.
