Pinhoti Trail hike

This weekend John Tracy and I headed up from Montgomery to hike on the Pinhoti from Porter's Gap to Adam's Gap. Good lord it was hot. We had a nice breeze for most of the hike, but it only helped a little. The only good water we found was at the campsite 5.2 miles north of Porter's Gap and then at Double Springs campsite. There were a couple of little trickling streams within a mile north and south of Double Springs campsite, but these will most likely dry up soon.
Ok, here's my question: what animal is chewing on all of the metal Pinhoti trail signs? See the attached photo. It looks like squirrel or raccoon but it's hard to tell. Is there something in the paint or aluminum that tastes good? Very weird.
We were supposed to camp at Double Springs on Saturday night, but the hike was so hot we decided to head to the car early and go enjoy some cold beer in Sylacauga. We didn't find beer, but only because we found frozen margaritas! There's a mexican restaurant called L'Acosta near the intersection of Broadway and Highway 148 which is pretty good (well we were ravenous so your mileage may vary).
The trail from Clairmont Gap to Burgess Point is BADLY overgrown and needs some serious maintenance. We veered off of the trail 9-10 times on this section due to excesive foliage.
