Playing w/ an ultralight pack.

Well, I received a DIY G4 type backpack in the Backpacking Box that Jason Klass started. And friday afternoon played with it. The verdict is my gear that I carry normally is just too much for it at this time. Most of the problem is my sleeping bag (20 deg Coleman synthetic, 4.0 lbs) is too bulky and takes up 80% of the available space in the main compartment. I could try compressing the bag more w/ a compression sack but the one I have has a broken strap buckle (slumberjack) and I'm unsure if I can return it (didn't keep receipt, bought @ Gander Mtn.). I placed my BA blowup pad, tarp shelter, cookset/alky stove and repair/emergency kit in the outer mesh pocket. So I was 90-95% full w/out any clothes, water carriers or food. If I could get a sleeping bag that was 50-75% smaller in volume I'd be good togo. Of course I might actuall need to use my ginormous Camp Trails Catskill (4500-5800 cu. in. and 5.5 lbs.) pack if the weather looks chilly, But I sorta doubt it.
I used the Catskill recently on my overnighter in MCNP but it was overkill (too heavy and bulky) but it carried prett well. It was overkill even when I really overpacked (too much food, clothes, a 2man tent and a bulky Peak1 stove) so I 'm sure if I if I dropped weight and bulk that it will be alot more than I need.

Re: You need that 69 dollar down
Yeah, kinda kicking myself for passing that up now. But I just got the Coleman bag from goodwill (NIB) in March and I really like it, but it's bulky.
And i got a 6x9 Sil-Nyl tarp out of The Box too. My aluminum scout cookset is pretty light and will hold the penny stove and windscreen. And it's wide bottom really is a good fit for the penny stove's flame pattern. Not quite ready to join the ranks of those weirdo hammock hangers. ;-)
