Awsome. I recently saw a good article on how to convert a 20 degree bag into an ultralight quilt here.

http://purebound.com/homemade/sleepingbag/

looked pretty cool

Careful about a used stove though. Lighting compressed alcohol vapors can be bad for your hair... As in on fire. Take it from someone who manages to set himself on fire once a year at least. I'm already up by two this year and we have quite a bit left.

from what I can tell its a wood stove. It doesn't look like the alcohol ones. although it does look like it could be used as one with very little alteration.
Its brand new btw lol it doesn't have a smudge on it!

Sounds like some good finds Graceless!

Matthew, if it were not so serious, your, shall we say, mishaps, it would be a bit funny. I can tell you right now, if I ever get the opportunity to hike with you, I ain't carrying the fire extinguisher!

It was supposed to be funny Grin. It did happen though Roll Eyes.

I have officially been banned from using a charcoal grill by my wife.

Ohh and those little old style hand warmers that run on zippo fuel... Yeah, I am not allowed near those.

We also had to buy a really nice fire extinguisher for the basement and the kitchen as well because I build my gear in the basement and some of the earlier experiments with the Penny alcohol stoves were a tad on the near miss side of things.

Contrary to popular belief, you can light a charcoal grill without a full bottle of lighter fluid... You don't need to be banned from using a charcoal grill, just from using lighter fluid. Wink

OK class, today we will NOT be disecting the frogs in the lab, Matthew has already blown them up..........

Matthew asks the instructor in earnest; Are you sure an internal combustion engine burns it's fuel inside the engine block? I'm sure the one in my basement at home............ .

Just for clarification purposes, Did your wife completely ban you from using a charcoal grill or just using one that was by or near her? Grin

OK enough Matt bashing by me...........Bac k on topic........ Sorry I was having an FD1 moment.

Hmmm. I find old down comforters all the time at Thrift stores. Is it easy to restuff an old poly sleeping bag w/ down, esp if you dont care about keeping the zipper?

LOL!! to funny! yeah I have had a few mishaps myself ..someone made the mistake of telling me how in a tight hand sanitiser could replace fuel for my penny stove..AHEM. Oh nooo that was chapped lips and sunburn thankyou!
And as for restuffing with down. I will lyk when I get there:P It looks as tho I would need to sew some baffles using some interfacing then stuff the baffles with the down to insert in between the out and inside of this sleeping bag..
But if your bag is a single wall with solid baffles and not stiching seperating the middle from the sides then I can't see that being an issue...
OK going to get my video camera and see if I can figure out the digital photo function to get a picture of the stove thingy

ooo oooo I can't remember the name of it but I want to say that is a British made alcohol stove I saw online somewhere. They are pretty cool because they simmer well. I remember they did seem a bit heavy.

No.  Unless you dont care that your home looks like a goose exploded!  The stuff is like baby powder and gets airborne at the slightest whiff!

Matthew is not allowed near public grills that close. They tend to collect grease in the interior of the lid and when he opens the lid the conflagration rides the air wave into his face and up his nose. Matt's head is way too flammable to let that happen twice. Also he has a tendency to refuse to use funnels and spill alcohol/fuel, but not really realize it until everything is on fire.

Ironically when we first began camping together Matt could smother a campfire faster than I could fetch a beer. He still has to let me tend fire if we want to keep warm.

That Alcohol stove is pretty much worthless! I am going to see how it stands up as a little wood one. with all those interior parts out it weighs much less and might be a little more compact than my coffee can one.. we'll see.
The cover over the canister for the alcohol would smoother it every time soooo Smiley

And btw I am going to make a down pillow. just to see how well re-purposing a down comforter will work.
