The reviews complain about minor underexposure, but this is ridiculous.
Based on the Amazon reviews, at least a few people have complained of the exact same problem in AUTO mode.
While it doesn't directly address the problem, updating the firmware might help. Fuji has released a firmware update that supposedly fixes the following problem: "The brightness of the captured images when “EVF/LCD mode” is set to “60fps” is darker than that set to “30f/s”." The first option would be to set the EVF/LCD mode to 30f/s and see if that helps, otherwise you might want to try the firmware update, but follow the directions VERY carefully.
