Bug poison that is!  What do you use for skeeter beater / tick repellent?

I like a natural based option simply because of the adverse effects that DEET can cause of certain fabrics.  While I find the natural repellents do work, they must be reapplied more frequently.

AND**  anyone heard of this theory?  I was talking bug spray with another hiker the other day and he said that a couple days prior to hitting the trail he takes a daily shot or two of apple cider vinegar.  He claims that when you excrete the vinegar via your sweat glands, the ticks dont like it?!  Im sure you hiking buddies wont like you either but if it keeps the ticks away, who cares!

I normally use Mosquito Coast (combo bug spray and SPF) because I hate to carry multiple chemicals with me.  The Mosquito Coast seems to work very well as SPF and good to very good as a mosquito repellent.  I have NOT observed that it is very good at repelling ticks.  If I'm hiking in areas prone to heavy tick infestation, I will go ahead and bring DEET.

The OFF mosquito repellent works very well around home - DEET is the primary agent there as well.  Avon Skin-So-Soft and citronella based products do not seem to work great for me.

I've heard stories similar to the vinegar-based thing, but have not tried them personally and don't know of anyone who has.  (Have heard similar stories about garlic!)

My Dad says they used crepemyrtle branches under their house when he was growing up to repel mosquitoes!

For some reason I don't seem to attract many mosquito's, don't know why but it's been that way since I can remember. I used sit around the campfire, feeling left out, because everyone was complaining about the "dang-skeeters". So needless to say I don't use insect repellent of ant kind!
As for the ticks, I must once again be "lucky" because I have only ever had ONE that I know about and it was quite recent on a trip to sipsey, Borden creek to be exact. Being a Florida native, I have certainly had my share of exposure of these outdoor nuisances, but they leave my alone. Hmmmmm, wonder if I got some sort of insect repellent gene or just stink that bad.

I'm a 25% DEET minimum man myself. The 90 something percent stuff is even better, but it really melts plastic. Wink I can't use it when carrying camera gear except on my legs, but the DEET really does work. However, I've found that it seems less effective in certain areas, particularly in the woods, especially pine forest, compared to out in the open. Maybe it works best with a little breeze?

The off wipes are a cool idea, but work less than the 25% DEET spray, which is the bare minimum in my mind. Sometimes I want to put on the dog's Frontline/Advantix, and let the suckers bite me, only to have them die when they do. Wink

As for the Apple Cider Vinegar, I've heard that too, and I imagine that it has to have some effect, because I can smell other things on myself days after I eat them, like onions and garlic, but I have a freakish sense of smell. I won't be using this rememdy, however, because even with a 40mg Zegerid (PPI acid reducer) a day and a bottle of Tums a week, I'm still having stomach pains despite being medicated for this "gastritis w/GERD" for nearly a year. I think my doctor's aren't helping me enough...
