Pinhoti Trail Work -Fall 2008 Oct. 27-31

The Fall Trail Work is scheduled for Oct. 27-31
As usual we'll camp at Cheaha SP for the Pinhoti Trail work period.
The section of the Pinhoti Trail we'll work on is the Cheaha Wilderness. It's 10 miles and full of blowdowns. We had a severe thunderstorm last March and a bunch of trees went down. Unless somebody went in there and took them out, we'll have plenty of work to do. Please bring backpacks and all your backpacking gear as we'll camp one or more nights on the trail. Other nights we'll camp at Cheaha SP where its' free camping for the trail crew.
Come for a day, three or all of them! Bring tools if you have them, if now, we have plenty to share.
If you would like to help out need more info please post here or send me a message.

AlaTrails really wants to get behind these projects. I will put up 10 Karma points per day of work on this project. That makes for a total of 50 Karma points!!! This is a great way to give back to the community and make sure that the Pinhoti is in good shape for future use.

:::BUMP:::
And an update! This work week is fast approaching, we could use all the help we can get! AHTS has been contacted by the Forest Service and is asking for assistance in cutting and clearing the new trail over Rebecca Mountain (this is currently a road walk and will extend the woods trail south from Bull Gap!) Come out and be a part of the crew that puts in this brand new trail and be a part of the Pinhoti's history!
Dont have tools? Dont worry, we have plenty to share!
As a reminder, we are using Cheaha State Park as our base camp. If you come out for the maintenance, your camping is FREE at Cheaha!
Have questions or need more info, post here, or send me a message!

Do you guys have a tentative itinerary? Or are you going to be back at the Cheaha camp each morning or night? I might be able to bring something to help(snacks- gatoraid -ice beverages -etc) not sure if I can manage a day to help unless I bring all the kids to help too:)(yk they would to so if you need some small trail helpers) Any thoughts?

Cheaha is our base camp, we will start/end each day there. As for the kids, depends on their ages/abilities.

So does anyone know where I should show up if I join the work crews Tues evening or sometime Wedn. ? Are they working at Rebecca Mountain AFTER they finish at Cheaha wilderness ?
I'll try phoning the FS I guess.

Ed,
Im headed out there either tonite or early tomorrow (Tues). If you drive back to the campground area, look for a very large and fancy RV with a Montana license plate. There should also be a small green and yellow AHTS along the road side of the RV. We usually head out by 9am, eat lunch while out working and are back by mid afternoon.
Bring all your camping gear, its free while doing the maintenance. You'll also need your own food, or dine in the restaurant...
Not sure I'll have cell service but I'll send you my number in a message momentarily.
As of right now, all work is scheduled to be on Rebecca Mtn. If we miss each other, try finding us at/near Bull Gap.

Trail Maintenance Update:
One of the largest crews made an appearance for this work week and its still got one day left!
I cant thank everyone enough for giving of their time and energy for such a worthy cause.
On Monday, Trails Unlimited arrived and began assessing placement of the new trail on Rebecca Mountain.
On Tuesday, the Trails Unlimited crew began cutting new trail with a very powerful piece of machinery (I have *got* to get me one of these!) Our crews followed the machinery pruning limbs and roots out of the way, making for one nice trail!
On Wednesday, we had enough people show up to work that we split into two teams. One crew went to Rebecca Mtn to help the Trails Unlimited Crew. The Trails Unlimited crew moved to the southern end of Rebecca Mtn and began cutting new trail heading north. Our crew again followed helping cut out roots and trim back tree limbs. We also assisted the chainsaw crew in removing brush and trees as they were cut. The other group took hand tools, and starting at Adams Gap, worked their way through the ENTIRE Cheaha Wilderness all the way to Cheaha Trailhead, removing ALL blowdowns! It took this crew all day, but the work they did is invaluable, thanks guys!
Thursday found us again with a large crew. One group started clearing blowdowns in Talladega NF, working from CR24 south towards Cheaha SP. The other crew took hand tools back to Adams Gap and started work on cleaning up the brush that was encroaching the trail (knee slappers, eye pokers, pack grabbers...)
Friday is the last day for work in this area. Work will be determined on as as needed basis, depending on how far the crews reach today (Thurs.)
Saturday, base camp will be relocated to Flagg Mtn, near Weogufka, AL. Work will begin on Sunday.
Matt, for Karma purposes, RigorMortis was there for a day and I was there for 3...
Also, BOLO for new member MotherNature'sSon!
