Wild South hike in the Talladega National Forest:  Rebecca Mountain

Saturday,  November 15, 2008

Make trail blazing history as one of the first hikers on the newest section of the Pinhoti Trail!

Leaders:  Wendi (Alabama Hiking Trails Society) and Janice Barrett (co-leader)

Distance:  4 ½ miles roundtrip

Rating:  Moderate

Anyone 10 years and older welcome!

Once complete, the Rebecca Mountain section will add approximately 10 miles of woods trail to the southern end of the Pinhoti National Recreation Trail.  This section is currently a road walk.

The 2 mile section that we will hike on November 15 was cut thelast week of October by the trail building division of the National Forest Service, Trails Unlimited and a crew from Alabama Hiking Trail Society.  (Including our very own Rigor Mortis & Cuffs)

Other than the trail crews, no one has yet hiked this woods-trail section!

The new trail bed is nice and open.  It’s a gentle grade uphill all the way to a rock outcropping at the ridge of Rebecca Mountain.  We will break here for snacks or lunch.

Be sure to bring plenty of water as there are no known water sources in this area.

Views should be beginning to show the area as the leaves fall, and there should still be some great fall color!

We will meet in Sylacauga at 9:00 a.m. at a place to be announced, then carpool to the trailhead.  (This location would be difficult to find on your own.)

To sign up or ask questions, contact Janice Barrett at janice@wildsouth.org or 256-974-6166

Bring a backpack lunch, snacks, plenty of drinking water.

Dress comfortably for the weather and remember to pack rain gear just in case we get lucky and there is rain in the forecast.

Shoes or boots need to be sturdy, comfortable, with good tread for reliable traction.

Wild South leads hikes on our public lands throughout the month.  If you are not currently on our e-mail list for Alabama hikes and activities and would like to be, please contact me (Janice Barrett).
