Ok we go bushwhacking out to Caspey Creek, above the falls we notice someone has cut down a bunch of small hemlocks. These are the only trees cut down, they just cut halfway through the trunk and push them over,  these are all 3-4 inch in diameter max. There is probably 10-12 of them done this way, just in this area that we could see. Anyone know why someone would go to this remote location to cut them down?

I was bushwhacking on Capsey this weekend as well but didn't see that.  Where did you go in?

we went in off of FS124, this is a old road on your right past the houses. Follow the small creek to Caspey it is a beautiful way to go although a slow one.  Also found what was left of a old still, and more acorns and deer signs than I have seen in a while. Which way did you go?

I parked near the bridge on 266 and hiked upstream for a mile or so looking at potential basecamps for future exploration but only found one that would be suitable for a couple of tents (at most).  It was a nice spot...will be much nicer in the spring when there's actually water in the creek Smiley

Did you happen to run across any established campsites in the area you were in?

Hmm... Might want to try the Forest Service on that one. Maybe pest control? If not, they could be used to hide something. Either way, give the Forest Service the location and tell them what you saw.

I know they did a prescribed burn near Capsey Creek sometime before May, so maybe it happened then? But... I think I remember seeing similarly cut hemlocks around Capsey.

Nope I don't think you will find many established campsites in that area, but I will keep my eyes open and post coords If I find one. I got to go to Double Puddle Wednesday and will stop by rangers office.
