What are some of the best places to go for fall color hikes?

PS Josh you are not allowed to say anywhere north of North Carolina.

Not a hiking spot but a short drive with the most impressive views I've ever seen was the Foothills Parkway between Cosby, TN and I-40, northest of GSMNP.

North Carolina/Tennessee: I concur on the Foothills Parkway, especially on a foggy morning, but there are a few even better locations just down the street. The lake at the end of the Foothills Parkway has awesome reflections on a still day, and those power pylons are surreal. There are a few areas along the Cherohala that are pretty awesome if you time it right, especially on the NC side, and around Bald River Falls. Everybody will tell you Cades Cove, but I prefer the Balsams, because they give a different kind of "pure" foliage.

Alabama: One cool spot I found is where AL-25 passes through the Coosa Mountains at Wyatts Gap. Another spot I like is Little River Canyon, because the forest is mixed enough to get good color.

Now... It is north of North Carolina, but a LOT of people are saying West Virginia has been better than New England for a few years in a row. I've seen Maryland/VA/WV foliage most of my life, and some years I'd say it is, although I haven't been to the real deep color areas of WV.

Pine Mountain, Georgia has vast stands of hardwoods and is absolutely gorgeous in the fall.

The area between Montgomery and Valley, Alabama also colors up nicely in the fall. That would include Chewacla.

Blue Ridge parkway around Gatlinburg, TN and Cherokee, NC. Just got back from there a week ago and color was already starting  to turn at the higher elevations and it always has incredible views. Shocked

Woody,

Yup. That's the Balsams for the most part. My favorite area so far in North Carolina, largely because it is one of the few places east of the Mississippi where you can look out and see no signs of human presence, besides the BLP, at least in a few places.

Just got back from S.W. Virginia(yes I know it is north of N.C. but it was beautiful)  The Highlands were in max color and the reds and golds were brilliant!!!  We had a great trip.  I will try to post the pics this weekend.

I was up in the mountaims of North Carolina last Fall and it was absolutely amazing. Cheaha also looked beautiful last Fall with it's colors. There is not much vegetation here in El Paso so this Fall, unfortunatley, I will see no color.
