So the one thing that makes my nights on the trail hard is a good pillow.  My BigA pad is nice and cushy, my bag is warm and sung, but my neck is usually KILLING me.
I've tried "stuff" pillows (that you stuff your clothing in) and recently I bought a thrmarest compression pillow... and it's nice, but it squishes down during the night so I can't sleep on my side.(I sleep on my back, side and stomach throughout the night)
Well....if your like me I've found a new product thats answered my problems.
I was in A.O. outdoors the other day dreaming about sleeping bags and I see a "blow up" pillow laying on the table.  Normally I don't like blow up pillows.  They sleep hard and are usually made of slick material.  Well...this one was different.  It's called the Mammut Softskin.  It's self inflating, but the best part is: 1. It's soft to touch. 2. It stretches, so when you lay your head on it it's not hard!  And you can over fill it and it's PERFECT for side sleeping.(when you roll on your back...let some air out and your golden!)  It's also only 5oz (lighter than my thermarest pillow).
Anyhow, it's $25 (a little pricy I know) but I've already feild tested it and it inspired me to write up a little blurg here it made such a difference for me!
Just an FYI for anyone in search of a better backpacking pillow.

We have taken some of those arm floaties and cut them along the seam to make blow up pillows. Wrap a shirt around it and voila.
It's super cheap and simple. More comfortable than stuffing clothes, but still not perfect.

So we're looking for something better. I'll take a look at that Mammut.
Thanks for posting that as we had some pillow complaints this past weekend.

I checked out this pillow at AO the other day, WOW it is super soft. I normally use my stuff sac full of clothes as a pillow, but for 24 bucks and only a few ounces I will be adding this to my pack soon.

Cool addition to the gear closet.

I see where you're coming from though. In my hammock, a stuff sack of clothes works perfectly, but on the ground in the tent, I'm not so comfortable. One of my older airpads had the blowup pillow on it, that I enjoyed. Too bad that pad is really HEAVY.

I may be looking into it!

Hey highlife - I like the floaty idea. Sounds like I may need to "borrow" that one! Smiley Thanks.

Digging up a really old thread...

I just bought this pillow from Mammut and love love love it!

Im not one to carry 1-use gear, but this is now a staple in my pack.  we hadnt had stock on them in quite some time and I missed out on the first round of them, but we recently got more... I bought one, sold one to a friend and we now need more cuz everyone is buying them!  at less than 6 ounces its a great (luxury) asset to the pack.

Ive had it out on 2 weekenders and its now heading to Maine for 2 weeks this Friday.  I fully expect it to do well and be a welcome asset to my gear collection!!

On a sad note, the price has increased... its now $29.99.....   Shocked

Ah..the quest for the perfect pillow. I think the Holy Grail would be easier to come by.  Grin

I have bought, and burned more pillows than I care to remember. In my opinion, a good pillow is worth it's weight in gold. I have no problem spending money on a pillow. It's the good AND light AND compact part that's proving to be a challenge.

I currently have two pillows. One is the MontBell Comfort System Pillow. 2 ounces, packs very small and is the most comfortable inflatable I've tried so far. It is not soft and it does not stretch. When inflated fully for side sleeping, it becomes hard and your head tends to slide off.

My other pillow is simply a chunk of foam rubber cut from an old couch. Weighs about six ounces and has been trimmed to be absolutely perfect for side sleeping. It does not compress well at all, and takes up an inordinate amount of precious pack space.

It sounds like I have no choice but to procure a Mammut....

I use an inflatable pillow from Wal-Mart. It is lightweight, takes up little space when deflated and comes with a soft cover. Carl W.

I've been reading this thread and looking for that magic pillow. Because of years of being hit on the head playing football, my neck/spine is very sensitive to sleeping position/angle. I sleep on my side and have to keep my neck at least parallel with the ground or angled slightly up. I do not know why, but it is what it is and I deal with it.

At present I have to carry a regular sized firm pillow - it is the second heaviest piece of gear in my pack! Who else can make such a claim?  Grin  But, without the right pillow I am miserable to the bone ... neck bone, that is. I've tried some of the cheaper models and they did not work for me.

So are any of these pillows thick (or high) enough to keep my neck at least parallel with the ground while laying on my side? It would be nice to cut another pound out of my pack.
