Can anyone help me with information about the hunting season's in the Sipsey Wilderness? Are they allowed to hunt or is it a protected area?
I am planning another weekend trip over the 22nd of November, but might not want to be out there and hiking thru the woods with hunters around.
Has anyone had issues during the fall with the hunters? I have hiked the AP during bear season, and had no problems, but wanted some info on the conditions during the fall season in the Sipsey.
Thanks. Eric

Alternate weekends its legal to gun hunt east/west of Hwy 33 and whenever a gun hunt is on one side, all hunting stops on the other. So on a Zone B gun hunting weekend, there is no hunting in Sipsey, which is in Zone A.

I've had *minor* issues with hunters in Sipsey. Mostly parking. Wink

I wear lots of orange (orange t-shirt, orange hat, bright colored jacket, etc...) and make a little more human noise than normal during hunting season, and I've only been shot at once...well, I was shot near, not at, but it scared the crap out of me. I would avoid hiking during feral pig hunting, and during the prime hunting times. Unfortunatly, those are the prime photography times, too. Wink

I hunt Bankhead National Forrest and the Sipsey Wilderness Area.  I would wear orange for obvious safety purposes.  There are not a lot of hunters and most will not travel more than a few hundred yards from their vehichle.

The truth is this area is just to rugged for most hunters in our area and the success ratio is not that high for the amount of effort that gets put in.

During pig season I cover around 10 miles per day.  During Deer hunts I usually go in about a mile.  I have never seen another hunter once I get "into" my hunting areas, other than the guys I hunt with.

Hunters are not allowed to camp anywhere other than the "hunters" camps which I believe is terrible as it limits the distance that can be covered safely in a days time.  Who wants to hike in 3-4 miles shoot a deer or hog and drag it back out that far.

Go have a great time, and there is no real need to get concerned.  Have a great trip.
