Well, I'm glad to see wilderness area expansion. Not so glad about all the pork added to the bill, but I'll leave the political discussion of the bill for the political sites I frequent.

Just a shame Sipsey/Bankhead didn't get any of that expansion. There are still some areas around Sipsey that are sufficiently untouched or recovered to meet the requirements.

Passage of the bill would authorize the National Park Service to buy 1,656 acres to add to the Little River Canyon National Preserve near Fort Payne.

[ The acreage addition in SB. 22 will mainly protect the east rim of the canyon from development. It will also give the park service the land and right of way it needs to improve the winding, 11-mile scenic drive (Alabama 176) along the rim. At the moment, that two-lane road is not open to large motor homes or recreational vehicles. The planned improvements would correct that.

Just what we need, more money to widen the scenic route along the rim for large RV use !  If there is any left over, put in a bike lane on the southbound side since it will be about as damngerous then as the Blue Ridge Parway is for bicycles around Roanoke.

That land was getting encroached, and the road is in bad shape, but I'm not sure widening it is going to make it any more RV friendly, unless than plan on straightening out the canyons. Wink
