I probably should have stickied this back in November. Here are the 2 main webpages I know of that deal with the Hunting Seasons and camping permits required for Sipsey Wilderness and the Bankhead NF.

Hello All,

I have been out either camping or hiking at least 2 times a month since hunting season has begun. The permint procedure at the ranger's office cannot be any easier, either stop in or call them. They will fax a form and you can fax it back. We only have 3 more weekends to worry about the permits though.

The comments made in an earlier post this year could not have been more on target ( a little hunting humor). I have worn hunter orange each time, and have only ran into hunters once in the woods coming down the ridge, back to the trail. You might hear gun shots occasionally in the distance, but I never once felt threaten or in harm's way at any time.

Does any of the info in this subject need any updating for this upcoming season?

I'd consider hunters like I would bears.

They should hear &  see us hikers before we see them if we are the ones walking while they are already "in place".

So wear the bright orange even if you don't think you've ever seen a hunter.

If you are hiking in a designated hunting area during hunt season, you ARE required to wear 144 square inches of blaze orange, (if the ranger chooses to enforce it)  ust like the hunters are.  My sil packcover meets this requirement, so I just throw it over the pack and start hiking...

Does anyone know the designated hunting times for the Sipsey this fall/winter?  I've searched the web and not found anything.  I think they usually get both Thanksgiving and Xmas, which IMHO sucks.

Sipsey is clear of hunters next weekend I think. Not positive on that.

Many hunters out at Borden this weekend. I think squirrel. Many hunters, dogs, and gun shots.

There were so many cars at the Randolph trailhead today I had to park on the side of the road [with a half dozen others].  Only passed hikers in and out, though.  Most of them stoked about the great weather we've had.

Sorry for the stupid question, but I didn't see it addressed here:
Is hunting allowed in the 'Wilderness Area' (i.e. Sipsey)?

The Hunting Permit (regulations) specifies hunting in the 'Wildlife Management Area', not the 'Wilderness Area'.
Though I can't find where it explicitly says you cannot hunt in the Wilderness Area, I thought the Wilderness Area
was off limits for hunting.

the smart move is to still always wear Orange during hunting season of course.

I just recieved a reply to an email from the Rangers asking about permits for camping. Very nice lady replied that one was needed from Nov. 1 thru Jan. 15 (think the 15th). She send along a pdf file so I could print it off and drop one by their office. Got a tripped planned for the end of this month. Can't wait!!
