Any Canon owners used or own this lens?

http://www.amazon.com/Can...qid=1233123633&sr=8-1

It's kind of the kid sister to the 50mm 1.4, but for $86 I just couldn't resist.  Seems to have great Bokeh for such a cheap lens and I almost figure, eh, if it breaks....it was cheap!  Wolf Camera in Hoover had one on display and let me take a few test shots with it, and it seemed to do a wonderful job. (As best you can tell from the camera preview screen...which I know isn't saying much).

I have a 50mm 1.7 and absolutely love it. Now I just need to find a 28mm and I'll be set...Well, that's before I start upgrading the glass Smiley

You won't be disappointed!

Just as a note, there are several Canon 50mm lenses for the EOS system.

There was a 50/1.0L that cost a fortune.

There is a 50/1.2L that replaced the 50/1.0L, and costs a smaller fortune.

There is a 50/1.4 that is a somewhat better version of the 50/1.8mkII

There was a partially metal 50/1.8 (mk I) that was replaced by the mk II.

The current 50/1.8 mkII is commonly referred to as the "plastic fantastic" or some other tacky nickname, because it is dollar for dollar the best value in the Canon lineup, and plastic. I own one, and I totally recommend it. It is so cheap that too much thought isn't required, compared to most lenses, and offers excellent performance. Unless you do very specialized stuff in low-light, or certain other types of photography, the 50/1.8 mkII is the best choice. It doesn't have a fancy autofocus drive, it makes noise (described as a bee in an Altoids can), but it is light, sharp, and surprisingly tough.

Go for it.

Here are a few pictures I took with mine...

A macro shot using the 50/1.8mkII and extension tubes: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=5513529

An intentionally fuzzy picture of a butterfly: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=3683842

Truth be told, because of what I use my camera for, I don't use mine a lot. I struggled to find these. Wink

Great shots!  Wife let me know that mine arrived today, but I'm in Houston so won't get a chance to use it until this weekend.

50 1.0!  Haven't seen that one!  I was looking at the 50 1.4 (for $350) when I ran across this one.  I figure if I use it enough and wear it out, maybe I'll invest in the 1.4.  However, USM and a half stop aren't really worth an extra $250 to me at this point.

Glad to see some folks have seen this lens in action.  I'm pretty stoked!

It's USM, but it doesn't have full-time manual focus in the normal sense of the word. It has an odd kludge of a non-ring USM motor and a clutch to allow FTM, which tends to break, so the 50/1.4 isn't really worth it. I'm sure eventually Canon will release a 50/1.4 mkII with a ring USM, and maybe then I'll consider one.
