I have never been into Gatlinburg, only past it on the trail.  My wife and I are going for a few days this weekend and I have no idea of where to stay or what to do.  I figure the what to do will take care of itself once we are there.  As far as where to stay, there are so many cheap places that I don't have a clue as to which to pick.  The internet can make a crappy place look like the Taj Mahal.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  I might add that hiking is out of the question unfortunately as I am scheduled for surgery at the end of the month to fix a ruptured lumbar disk:-(((

If you are only doing car touring, I would suggest Cattaloochie. It's out of the way, but worth it.
We either always camped (I suggest Cosby campground) or rented a cabin though here: http://www.mountainchalets.com/

Have fun.

Depending on what you want to spend there are a lot of options. The Days Inn in Pigeon Forge had some really cheap rates last March (like 25 dollars) and it was clean and nice. We used it before hiking to the top of LeConte to stay in the lodge. I generally like to stay in a cabin when I am not backpacking and I have had great success with these folks:

Dollywood and the Dixie Stampede are fun although Dollywood may be too much walking for you. The music shows there are fun and I enjoy them since I skip the rides.

Here is the Gatlinburg site with info:

Have a great trip.

Don't! No dollywood, no junksy wild west photos, etc...

Stay the heck out of Gatlinburg/P-forge if you want to visit GSMNP. They built a bypass for a reason. Wink

I've found a few places I think are good (or would be good) places to stay in the area. I've stayed at the LaQuinta in Pigeon Forge a few times, and if you can get past the cemetary/crematorium in the backyard, it is one of the most convienient hotels to the central section of the park, because it is about two lights from the Gatlinburg bypass. The ride in sucks, but getting to the park is really fast. Another place I haven't tried, but looks good, is the Days Inn (?) in Townsend. It might be good, it might be nasty, but it is usually deserted, and it provides instant access to that area of the park. Watch your possessions in PF and Gburg, the meth related theft issues are MASSIVE in the tourist areas, including the rental cabins.

I won't give you the standard advice of driving Cades Cove and the Motor tour or whatever, because I find both of them not worth the traffic most of the year. If you are going now, or in another off-season, fine, go for it. But my best advice is to look at the park map, look up names, and find somewhere you think you'd like. I'm partial to the area around Heintooga Ridge Road/Balsam Mtn road, although much of that area is closed this time of year. Cataloochee is okay wildlife watching without the crowds. If there is ice, they close the road in winter in sections, so you might have to approach from North Carolina. In winter, everywhere you can drive is probably tolerable, crowd-wise, but during the on-season you have to either get up early, go during the week, or head to the fringes to avoid the crowds.

But... If you are one of those people (or your wife is) who would enjoy Gatlinburg proper, my advice probably won't be helpful. I'm anti-people, and anti-tourist. I've been known to consider turning around after driving 2 hours to visit a waterfall somewhere, just because there is one carload of people nearby. Then again, between my camera gear and the chihuahua, I attract obnoxious questions. Wink

Oh... I should mention I LOVE Little River Road. There are two-road visible waterfalls, gorgeous plants, etc...

Oh, and if you need a sunrise/sunset location, I might be able to deliver, although I've never been to them in winter.

Avoid the over-exploited prostitution of the Smokey Mtns that is Gatlinburg.

I second the Cataloochee.

We had a great trip, really enjoyed ourselves.  My biggest reccomendation  would be to stay the hell away from Pigeon Forge!!!  While Gatlinburg has it's share of commercializatio n, Pigeon Forge is the ultimate prostitution of the Smokys!!!  I highly suggest eating breakfast at the Pancake Pantry at light 6 in the Burg, awsome!!!  Also, the Donut Friar makes the best donuts I have ever had.
We drove Cades Cove on Saturday morning in 60 degree sunny weather!!!  Sunday we headed back into the park and went from 55 degrees and less than 2000 feet of elevation to 30 degrees with 20 mph winds at almost 5100 feet at Newfound Gap.  I brought some snickers bars and gave them to several A.T. hikers we saw at the Gap.  I highly suggest both of these spots for pictures.  The road to Clingmans Dome of course is closed but we still saw plenty of snow at elevation.
I also suggest riding the tram up to Ober Gatlinburg.  There are great views into the park and we even saw 4 bears on the tram ride.
We did decide that next time we will stay in a less congested area such as Townsend or south into North Carolina.

Enjoy
Sam
