JC785 and I went on a little over night hike this past weekend to test out our new gear. I really like my new Gregory Z55.  We plan on doing a 3 day Sipsey trip at the end of the month. My pack at full weight was right at 35lbs. For our 3 day hike I would need to add 2-3 more lbs of food. I usually take a lot of food because I like to eat a lot.

I need to get some tyvek because the material I made my footprint out of is too heavy and too stiff when cold. Oh, and little camp towel.

Any suggestions for "must sees"  at Sipsey for first timers ?

PICS from this weekend:

Camp towels are easy.... any chamois will do. I think that Fall Creek Falls and Big Tree are the most sought after places in the Sipsey, as they are most popular. But I thought the Ship Rock and nearby trails were just as fun. Enjoy !!

Yeah, I got a little camp towel....I forgot to pack one this weekend. It makes cleaning not so clean. Tongue

I defiantly want to see Big Tree and Fall Creek Falls..wow, I guess they are most popular. I am taking my pops and little brother in March..we will go explore other trails then.

Just remember that the "must sees" are going to be covered up during nice weather, my advice...get there Friday evening...even if you have to hike in the dark a bit. Claim your land

We plan on getting there early Friday morning..leave here at 6am and get there around 9am. Hopefully there is a nice spot for about 3 tents.

Are there any restrictions on where you can make camp?  What exactly are the  "rules" of Sipsey ? ......Googling now

You can camp just about anywhere but PLEASE do not make a "new camp" ...use a existing fire ring etc..theres tons of existing ones in the Sipsey.

Always think ..Leave No Trace

If you are getting there that early on friday, you should have no trouble finding a good spot. Just be sure to plan your route taking creek crossing into account. It is supposed to rain some this week, and some crossings can be a bit rough, and the water will still be very cold this time of year.

I have emailed everyone going (5 people so far) to meet and see where everyone wants to go so we can map out our trip. I hope it is nice weather towards the end of the month.

I want to see Wolfpen Falls, Big Tree..well I want to see it all...We just need to see what is where and map it out.

Sounds good to me! We all need to get together and look at the maps and find a route. When you wanna have a meeting? We can do it at my house. My Gregory Z55 is supposed to be here today also the Jade 35 for Beth.

Haha, the Gregory has much better suspension than the Kelty. I need to get Melissa a pack now. REI is having a good winter clearance. Female packs and sleeping bags.

Dude you're a about a month late on the REI sale. I got DW a Flash 45 for $35 last month, its replacement the Flash 50 is going for $129. There might be some scraps left in the outlet section, but you have to be quick to get the really good deals.
