Grrrrr........I've never had a problem with Red Flag warnings before but I've been watching my WeatherBug in preparation for my upcoming campout and have been noticing everything south of the top two ranks of counties being under Red Flag conditions. Well, our site is in Lawrence County and hasn't been under red flag alert until yesterday.

So what would you do on a 9 day primitive campout under red flag alert. Does that eliminate a campfire? 9 days without a campfire is going to be  a problem (not nearly as bad as 9 days without a shower, but bad nevertheless.... .

According to NOAA, you should be good.

At a certain point you have to stop worrying about everything.  Cool

Nothing on the Bankhead NF website either.  I'd say, unless they put up signs saying there's a fireban, proceed cautiously.

Ignorance of the law does not excuse you from obeying the law.  Be sure to call the ranger station before Friday afternoon and get first hand knowledge.

What law are you referring to?

I was simply suggesting that if the rangers wanted to ban fires, they'd likely let it be known (web, public signage, something). Its not like we're under an extreme drought again.

First of all, dont get your panties in a wad, the comment was not directed at you, only that the person asking should take it upon themselves to get informed, not suppose that the rangers will post the info.  It is not the rangers job to go inform every last person of fire conditions.  It is upon the users of the forest to inform themselves.  And yes, we are still in drought conditions.  Thankfully, not as severe as a year ago, but still drier than average conditions currently exist (according to NOAA)

This is why I wear a thong. Hey they don't create wads and they are ultralight.

No, hard to wad I agree, but they do still give one helluva wedgie!

I recommend calling the ranger station.

I also think this thread could use an injection of "assume good faith" from Wikipedia, and maybe a little more care in how we carry ourselves here, especially in how we choose the language of our posts.

To keep this thread on-topic, I'd appreciate it if, from this point on, any personal disagreements stemming from this thread be carried out via private messages, or at least in an off-topic thread. If somebody ticks you off, tell them directly, and if you think you might tick someone else off, there is an edit button for a reason. I use it all the time. Wink

Ok, My bad. i did take that conversation in a completely inappropriate direction. You gotta admit it was funny. If you guys want to continue the funny bit of that conversation you can find it separated into a new topic over in off topic.

Actually, things are looking up. There wasn't a single red flag in the state today (although it looks like the Tombigbee is flooding) and it's supposed to rain most of next week, tapering off (it looks like) toward the weekend. This might actually be a nearly perfect week.

i still don't know what/where the red flags are, Wolf?  I guess it doesn't concern me anyway if I rarely to never make a campfire.  but I usually wear something "under", are there warnings about lack of that?

That's what the emergency management people broadcast when they mean, don't start a fire outside or you might burn down your entire neighborhood and possibly the rest of the world also.

It's one of NOAA's standard categories of weather alerts. It's one of the nonprecipitaion warnings along with lake wind advisories and flood warnings and such.
