Whats the plans for this weekend?
«
on:
March 17, 2009, 10:25:12 AM »
I was just curious to see who and where everyone was hiking/ backpacking this weekend?
Me and my wife are planning on heading to the Sipsey Friday after work. Not sure which trails we will be doing, it will be her first trip.

I am heading out early Thursday morning. I plan to camp at the Borden Bridge Thursday - Sunday.
Plans include: Trail 203 & Borden Creek Cave, hunting for salt peter cave (Bee Branch) and Trail 210 Mitchell Ridge.
Hope to see some Alatrail memebers during my walks!

There are at least 8 sites directly around the bridge on both sides of the creek. I have noticed that most people who park at the bridge hike in to camp in the woods. Should be OK to find a site. I will keep an eye on open sites, hopefully I will be at the same spot we met at last time. I'll let you know where the best spots are and if they are empty if you would like.

A friend and I may.... hopefully..... go down FS228, aka Caney Creek Road, to Atkins Cemetery and drop into the drainage to the west. Lamar Marshall called it Sweetwater Creek.
Or.... I may end up having to stay home and deal with stuff.

Good luck. Last fall we tried Trail 210 and it was so overgrown we turned around and went home. Ticks covered us up. Hiker beware.

That would be greatly appreciated. We get off at 5 so We will probably leave around 5:30 or 6 and it will take about 3 hours to get there. So we will be there around 8:30-9 hopefully.

Uncle Wayne,
Sipsy Wilderness Hiking Club has adopted Trail 210 and reports it is fully cleared from end to end.

I dunno. Guess I better call the Forest Service tomorrow and check it out. There's a private inholding down past the cemetery; it's clearly visible in Google Earth. Have you tried it and found it gated, toph?
BTW: a camping buddy, who I'll characterize kindly as "over-adventurous", recently spent yet another night on the trail in the Sipsey (his 3rd such "night out", I believe). He went in to the junction of North and South Caney, got turned around dayhiking, then thrashed out the next day. He went back later in the week to retrieve his gear at his campsite. My wife really prefers that I not go camping with him.

we drove to the cemetery 6-8 months ago. I would look at the road to the east of the drainage, might be a good way in

I just don't understand why she wouldn't want you to go camping with him

I don't think so but not sure. I drove the road a few years back just looking around and my GPS track indicates that I turned back well before the cemetary and not sure at this point "why" I might've done that. It's so unlike me if the road keeps going

I think he and I would get along GREAT but ditto the wife.

I'll be working here in LA, but there IS still trail work going on with the AHTS crew till Saturday, HQ'ed at Cheaha but working the south end of Pinhoti mostly. I posted this back a month ago, but for some reason, it never got put on the calender. Who can explain this mystery? A conspiracy ?
neither can I figure out why nobody this year, from "those in the know" at AHTS, spends time promoting whats going on on alatrails. Cuffs, you did a good job last fall, but you must have other fish to fry this spring.

If I still lived in Alabama I would help promote. However I will be up on the Pinhoti and the Cheaha area this weekend as I am on 10 days of leave.
