I agree, big time victory.  One of many to follow under his leadership I hope.

"It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it while you can, while it is still there. So go out there and hunt and fish and mess around.  Ramble out yonder, explore the forests, encounter the grizz, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air. Sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, that lovely, mysterious and awesome space.  I promise you this one sweet victory, over those deskbound people with their hearts in a safe deposit box and their eyes hypnotized by calculators. : you will outlive the bastards." I think it is a big time victory for all of the myriad of organizations that have fought to stop this practice for all this time. I don't think it matters who is in office. If t had not been for organizations like Wild South going to bat to prevent these kinds of things nothing would have ever come of it. Unfortunately politicians only listen if you make enough noise.

SO let's hear it for the noisemakers!!!!

WASHINGTON (March 25) - Congress has voted to set aside more than 2 million acres in nine states as protected wilderness - from California's Sierra Nevada mountains to the Jefferson National Forest in Virginia. The legislation, which opponents, mostly Republicans, called a "land grab" that would block energy development on vast swaths of federal land, is on its way to President Barack Obama for his likely signature.

Past News:
In 2005, The Bush administration's repeal a Clinton-era policy that banned road construction in nearly 60 million acres of wilderness will likely increase the 'human footprint' on pristine wildlands in the United States.
In 2006, The Bush administration proposed the sell of some 300,000 acres of National Forest land to generate $1Billion

I only hope that this administration will give the Forestry, Parks Service, ETC,  back the funding levels they had during the Clinton era...   and maybe we can regain what we have all watched be lost in our forest through funding neglect, the past 8 years.
