Look like I'm planning a trip for some locals to head to Sipsey on a quick overnighter this coming weekend (4/3-5). North Alabama has been getting hammered with rain lately, which makes for great waterfalls, but what about creek/stream crossings? Anybody have any info on the depth of the water near School House Falls and the Sipsey Fork along with FT209 at FT202.

Looks like our trip will star us at FT201 up to School House falls, across the Sipsey Fork, and SE along FT 209. Side trip up the tree, then back and camp along FT209. On the way out, we'll cross the Sipsey fork at FT209/FT202 and head back via Johnson's Cemetary.

We'll have two dogs in tow too. Should be fun as long as the crossings won't be waist deep.

Anybody have any info? Or would it be recommended to find an alternate route?

I was at, but didn't cross, the 209 crossing last week and it was only knee deep and that was after a 3" rain the night before.   There's not as much rain forecast for this week so you should be fine by the weekend. I'm headed to Sipsey now and will check the level at the picnic area for you.  Maybe that will help you gauge the level.

At 2 p.m. the water level at the Sipsey Picnic ground was at the middle of the 2.  Last Saturday at 2 p.m. it was over the top of the 4. It has dropped 2 feet (approx.) in 48 hours.

"It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it while you can, while it is still there. So go out there and hunt and fish and mess around.  Ramble out yonder, explore the forests, encounter the grizz, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air. Sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, that lovely, mysterious and awesome space.  I promise you this one sweet victory, over those deskbound people with their hearts in a safe deposit box and their eyes hypnotized by calculators. : you will outlive the bastards." Thanks for the update Uncle Wayne. That's quite helpful.

If it's 2' then that shouldn't be an issue. I just don't want it to be waist high and COLD.

Well, I was wrong about that.  I live about 10 miles from the Bankhead and I got almost 4 inches of rain today.  My father-in-law lives in Bankhead and he got just over 3 inches.  Lostsheep, if you check this again before leaving, be prepared.  It's gonna be a little deeper than I expected.  And cold.

But it will make for a good story when you get back.  Enjoy.
