I went up to Ruidoso, New Mexico for the weekend for a little bit of day hiking.
Up near Ski Apache(10,100 foot elevation):

Never been out west, either. I love to see pictures like this, because it gives a good idea of when to plan a trip.
Hope you had fun!

I spent a week in Socorro, NM once and never new it was so beautiful. I was amazed at the mountains with snow on top. My perspective was it was a desert scrub waste land. Not so. I would love to get out there again. Carl W.

Never been to NM, but I've been to AZ (especially Phoenix area) three times... The pics look great. Most of us do not acquaint the desert SW with snow, but it snowed in the Flagstaff AZ area (rim country) while I was in Phoenix a couple of weeks ago!
Even in the scorching heat of summer the Sonoran Desert is alive with plants and animals. The number of birds and reptiles astounded me. And the Superstition Wilderness was absolutely gorgeous during the Spring wildflower bloom!

Flagstaff is at 7000 feet above sea level so they get on average 100+ inches of snow a year.

The Southwest climate depends on elevation. For example I live in El Paso, Texas. It is only 2 hours from where I was in New Mexico yet Im at 3700 feet and Ruidoso is at 7000 feet. And the mountain there reaches 12,000 feet. So while El Paso is pretty much barren, sandy, and hot with little moisture Ruidoso is a stark contrast. They get a lot more precipitation, snow, and is about 20 degrees cooler. There is also bear, elk, deer, among many birds. So while being only 20 hours away you change climates completely.
