This is probably already in the forum somewhere, but instead of spending a long time looking...
A buddy canoed Sipsey a few weeks ago.  They took a side trip up Hurricane Creek about 1/4 mile to the first big falls.

I am wanting to get there this weekend, probably Sunday, if not storming.  I'll be on foot, not canoeing.  Does anyone have some waypoints or a track they could send me?  Or, does anyone want to go that's been before?  Looking at the Carto-Craft map, there is FS242 to the north and FS204-D to the south.  They both just go out and end on the high ground.  When I pull it up on Terrain Navigator, it shows that both roads used to run down to the creek and cross it just below the falls.

Looking for some direction.

Thanks!!--Terri

I don't have a GPS so I don't have waypoints or a track.

I started at the head of Hurricane Creek but the gate is now closed on that road. I would recommend starting at Hurricane Creek shooting range and follow the creek there down to Hurricane Creek. I don't believe there are any waterfalls upstream of this creek but there are several downstream and on the feeder creeks after you come to Hurricane Creek.

Old still site on Hurricane Creek: N34 15.5910   W087 21.6500 is the only waypoint I have marked with me.  I have a couple more but I don't have them loaded in my GPS.  I believe this is above the two falls on Hurricane Creek and roughly a mile as the crow flies from HWY 33.

That's a very pretty but very rough canyon.  Or at least it was 10 years ago.  I haven't been there according to my notes in almost that long.  Time flies when you're having fun.  Good luck.

Found 3 more:
Hurricane Creek Falls N34 15.392  W87 21.868

Water Fall N34 14.582  W87 21.617  ( I believe this may be Walker falls although it's unnamed in my waypoints.  If so, then there's a 100' waterfall in the vicinity also.  It could be the exact opposite also.  If memory serves me, Walker falls is probably 20 to 25' high and further upstream than the 100' falls. The 100' falls is on a separate stream than Walker but flow together into the Sipsey.)

Parking for the above: N34 14.227  W87 21.363

Beware! these were taken about 10 years ago.  Some I took during that time I have found to be less than accurate recently.  Most of the waypoints from that timeframe have been very close though.  It's in the ballpark at least.

Well - as this weekend is looking dubious weather-wise.....what about May 23 or 24 (Memorial Day wkend) or May 30 or 31?  Try to get a group?  Toph maybe? others??

My Saturday search & rescue practices are over after this weekend until September, so Saturdays will be free for a bit.  But, it's gonna be getting awfully hot for bushwhacks soon.

And thanks for the waypoints, Unc!  I'm plotting them on Terrain Navigator shortly.  And I've heard about that 100' falls and have coords for one, but it's not the same as your coords. We'll see....

I plotted these on Terrain Nav and I think you are correct.  This second one shows up on the map very close to where I have the 100' falls marked.  Unfortunately, I don't have the CD with these maps on it with me, so they are just out in the "white" right now.  I'll have to bring in the other CD tomorrow.

Well-----tentative plans now to hit Pt. Mallard early that morning for the balloon launch with some photog buddies.  Balloons launch between 6 am and 7 am, more or less. What time you thinking?

24th would be better.

Ok - 24th is good.  CWHiker may be coming as well. We need a time and a meeting place.  I believe she has or is going to stop and talk to Janice @ Trading Post/Wild South and quiz her on best route.  I will probably see her Saturday morning @ Jubilee.  If not, I'll give her a call on Saturday.  Check back here on Saturday afternoon for time/meeting place.  See you Sunday! (weather permitting)

Alright. I'm still thinking starting at the shooting range will be the best way and we could leave a vehicle at the parking area to the 100' waterfall. It's going to be a fairly long hike.

Josh, sorry you can't make it.

Yeah - One of Janice's routes was from the shooting range.  But the 100' waterfall, that's in a different place, right?  Or can we get to it from Hurricane creek?

It's a couple drainages below Hurricane Creek and well worth a visit.. about a 10-15 minute hike from Hwy 33.

Seeing all the falls on Hurricane Creek, Walker Falls and the waterfalls around the 100' waterfall + a few Indian shelters and a marker tree would make a fantastic hike.

Well----after checking the weather again, I'm thinking tomorrow is a no-go.  I don't really mind hiking in the rain, but one of my main reasons for going is to try and get some good waterfall shots.  And I don't want to carry camera equipment in the rain.  Looks like it's a definite in the morning and then t-storms in the afternoon.  Maybe try again later - getting pretty late in the year for a bushwhack though.  Keep it in mind and maybe we can get a few folks together later and take a shot at it.

It's not too fun bushwhacking in the rain.

Yep, try again later.
