Since McDowra found that the Birmingham chapter of the Red Cross was having a class the last weekend of the month, I called the Morgan county chapter.  The lady who normally takes care of scheduling classes was on vacation and will be back today (Friday).  The lady I talked with said she doubted if there would be enough local interest to have a class, usually 6 to 8 people minimum.

I told her that I believed I could find that many people interested if the Red Cross would schedule a class.  She told me to call back Friday and talk with Becky, who normally handles scheduling classes. ( I think that's who she said, as I type this at 1:30 a.m.  my memory is a little foggy.)   I was told with enough local interest and a need for the class, something could be worked out.

So if you're closer to Morgan county than Jefferson county and would be interested in taking a Wilderness First Aid class by the American Red Cross, call the Decatur office today and let them know.  Their number is 256-353-4891.

I plan on calling early and will post what she tells me later today.

"It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it while you can, while it is still there. So go out there and hunt and fish and mess around.  Ramble out yonder, explore the forests, encounter the grizz, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air. Sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, that lovely, mysterious and awesome space.  I promise you this one sweet victory, over those deskbound people with their hearts in a safe deposit box and their eyes hypnotized by calculators. : you will outlive the bastards." I went by after work and talked with Becky.  She said she had an instructor for the class but had misplaced his contact info.  She's been on vacation this week and from the look of her desk, she's way behind on her paperwork.  In fact she said "it may be late next week before I can get back with you."

She said someone from the local Boy Scouts has already approached her about the training also.

I'll let you know ASAP.

Becky told me she's still trying to locate the guy who said he was interested in teaching the class.  No contact made yet.

Here's the latest.  I found a guy who is a certified para-medic and has taught this class to some Boy Scout troops. The scout leaders highly recommend him.  Becky at the Red Cross still has not found the Red Cross guy who is qualified to teach WFA.  But since this is not a Red Cross certified instructor, we can't use the Red Cross classroom for the WFA class.

He wants at least 15 people  to hold the 16 hour class and needs a room where he can use his projector.  His price is $50 plus $20 for the book which he will furnish.  If the book is returned at the end of the class, the $20 will be refunded. He prefers teaching the class on Saturday and Sunday. Those who successfully complete the class will get a certificate.

So if all interested parties will PM me with real world contact info, I'll see if we have enough interest to go further.  Once we have a group of interested people, we'll determine a central location that will be as convenient as possible for the majority.
