Hello All,

Anyone been out hiking lately? I have wanted to, but the hot weather has been keeping me at home. Planning on going out next weekend though.

I was wondering what current conditions are. Water still flowing? Has Fall Creek Falls dried up yet?

I was there 2 weeks ago, Falls Creek and all the other large volume falls (Little Ugly, Eagle Creek) were going full blast or nearly. Horseflies were annoying. Lots of hog sign and they came thru/near my campsite (deep on 200 and 206) both nights.  Seasonal/smaller falls were trickling. Mosquitoes came at dusk but were deterred by 30% DEET. Only saw 1 tick but pants were treated w/ permethrin prior.

I went out today. It's about at the miserable hot level. The gnats and spiderwebs are terrible. I got 2 ticks in 10 minutes. The water seems to still be flowing descent but is slowly drying up. Last Wednesday, Upper South Caney Falls and Kinlock Falls were flowing great.

I was thinking about heading out this weekend, but the reports above, along with my camping gear being in New York, are going to keep me here in Nashville. Maybe I'll take a ride, and I'm planning on making some sausages, but that's no substitute for Sipsey.

BTW... I've only hiked once in TN this year, but at least here, the spiderwebs and spider activity is through the roof, is that true everywhere, and is it normally like this, and I've just been lucky in the past?

I have the same report as Pully.  It is not an enjoyable time to be out for me.  The ticks are much worse now plus the gnats and skeeters are in full force also.  I'm looking forward to cooler weather!

Yep i agree, we are waiting for cooler weather. We did go to http://fallsmill.com/ to see a working mill. I highly recommend it, with all the old mill sites in the forest it gives you a different perspective.

I got about 30 minutes of trail time today at Narrows of Harpeth SP west of Nashville. Nice area, but even with the rain and cooler weather I couldn't tolerate the gnats and bugs without insect repellant, which I forgot...

Hello All,

I was able to get a hiking day in over the long holiday weekend, and wanted to update everyone. I hiked the other side of the Borden to Falls Creek Falls, and back on the 200 to my car.

1. It was very HOT walking/hiking. Low 90's, but very humid. Drenched in sweat entire hike.
2. Water level is low. You can probably walk most of Borden Creek except for the spots where there is a deep pool. There are 2 new blowdowns across the creek since I was last out. Large trees that will create some huge jams once the rains start in the winter.
3. Falls Creek Falls has a small flow coming over the rocks above. Maybe the width of your hand. I don't imagine it will last long.
4. Only 1 tick, but gnats and mosquito's were bad.
5. No one camping, very few hikers.
6. Did I mention it was HOT?
7. I don't know if it has an official title, but the large meadow, open field where the scouts camp half way on the 200 had lots of hog sign. The entire woods around the clearing looks like someone drove a tractor around and tilled up all the dirt.
8. Both trails in good shape. Either I 've gotten bigger or Fat Man's Squeeze has gotten smaller Wink

Too hot to hike so we went driving down some of the less traveled forest roads. It sure is green out there, can't wait till cooler weather gets here!
