how clearly are the trails marked? i'm thinking about a mid-week camping trip, and my compass skills aren't up to par just yet. don't want to run the risk of getting lost my first time out in 13 years.

they give you the trail map too at the camp store - cheap, if not free - so you can "see" where you are as well.

The map is 50-cents to $1, I think. Wish they would put an honor box at the trailheads, the camp store is abit out of the way if you're not camping in the camground.

Both gate houses have the maps as well as the information center before you enter via the main entrance...

I would advise against the backcountry site that is at the top ridge of Double Oak Mtn...  Theres a train junction area just to the south of the park and the trains there run all night... whistles and all... the sound carries across the flats and then right up to the ridge!

okay, i'm thinking get up there by about 2pm tomorrow if i can swing it. can you stay at a different back country spot each night? if so i'm thinking i'm going to do the red trail, camp, day two do some more of it, camp at a different site, and then day three complete it and come home.

I've never actually camped at OM.   Are campfires permitted in the backcountry sites?

Calicojack,

Did you make the Oak Mtn trip?  How did it go?

I didn't. due to lack of food preparation utensils. that has since been rectified and i will hopefully be going next week (provided my days off are back to back)

thats sounds like a lame excuse calico !

Along with a water bottle, if I've got one knife, a finger, a tongue, 5 or 6 teeth, plus a big magnolia leaf and a stick.  I'm good to go  ;-)

once you get it all figured out, bought and packed, you'll discover that a trip of less than 3 nights takes less time than the planning, packing and unpacking; with fewer memories.  You CAN go for 2 days with nothing but comfort (junk) food and Cliff bars and leave all the utensils at home.

Enjoy
