This weekend at the Open Pond Recreation Area in Conecuh National Forest the Alabama Hiking Trail Society
will host an end of Summer camp-out to say goodbye to the long, hot, Summer that is now history. We will meet
at the campground Loop A, hopefully beside the lake, Saturday, September 26-27. Sunday morning we will hike
around the South Loop Trail of the Conecuh Trail (weather permitting). Conecuh National Forest is a beautiful
example of Coastal Forest with longleaf savannahs, expansive pitcherplant bogs, Red-Cockaded woodpecker
colonies, and sinkholes that become ponds and lakes throughout the 83,000 acre Forest. Conecuh National
Forest is a living classroom for Auburn University. So, if you have not ventured to this treasured land along the
border with Florida, this is your chance. If you have, you know what lies within. If coming, plan to meet at 4: 00
pm. A $6.00 fee per campsite is charged. For more information contact Erik Douglas at edouglas@hikealabama.org
or call 251-776-2317
