I am back from my short hike on the AT over the weekend. This is my second time on the AT the first was a short maybe 2 miles near Fontana Dam. The weather was beautiful around 65 degrees. Everyone has told me the terrain is the same as the Pinhoti but the climbs were a lot steeper and me being a new hiker and not in the best shape carrying a 30lb pack it was a workout but it was well worth it. I saw 3 squirrels, 1 flying squirrel numerous birds (towhee, wood thrush cardinals juncos and so on).
a black racer and that was it, even with the bear warning. I am not much of a writer so here are some photo's.

Glad to see the mushrooms. I think they are way too overlooked by people, but their variety is really neat in my opinion. If you get to the Smokies lookout for foxfire shrooms, they are supposed to glow in the dark! I never could find one though  :'(

If you havn't read it, check out Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods. It's a nice read about his attempt at hiking the AT. It's a great read!

Thanks for the pics, keep em coming!

I'm guessing those are worn out footwear from AT hikers. Note the duct tape. I've seen that a few times, and I do not approve.

There's a hole worn straight through the sole of the far right boots. I wonder who eventually has to pack those out?

Thanks for the comments!

the boots were not on the trail they are at Mountain Crossing's store a lot of them inside the store on the ceiling and outside on that tree. They also had old packs and stuff that was just completely used up by through hikers in the store. Here is a link to M.C. it is the only place the AT passes through a building.

Again thanks and I hope to be on the hike this Saturday and will get to meet some of you.

Ah, that's pretty cool, did you get any souvineers from the store? You're kind of making me homesick, we used to hike the AT in certain sections back in NC during my Boy Scout days. I miss it! My pension kicks in at age 50, I plan to have the AT thru hiked by 51!
