I cracked the screen on my Nikon point and shoot recently and realized that I need something sturdier due to my bull in a china shop way of life. Does anyone have any experience with the Olympus Stylus Tough 8000? If it's as sturdy as it says it's a good option for me. I'll also use it for skin diving. What I'm really wondering about is how the pictures hold up as a point and shoot camera? I'm not looking for professional quality here, but I'm curious if darker shots will come out grainy like so many other point and shoot cameras. If you have any other recommendations I'd love to hear em.

I am seriously considering this same camera.  From all reports I can find, it seems to fit a backpackers bill!

Disclaimer: I've never used this camera.

Will darker shots come out grainy like a P&S? Probably, point and shoot cameras use smaller sensors, which tend to generate more noise. Read up on reviews of the camera and see how the noise performance compares with other P&S cameras in the class.

Will it hold up? Probably. Those specs look pretty impressive, although I'd probably discount them by at least 50% for safety's sake.

That's about what I figure as far as the waterproof and shock proof ratings. I don't think it's a good idea to let it soak in the water, but if it's in my pocket and I have to skip through a river I bet it will hold up well. Or if I do what I did to my Nikon and slip it in my back pocket then slip down a bank maybe the screen will hold up better.
