The doctor told me to lay off the white flour stuff and gave me this recipe for a homemade biscuit recipe.  They are trail worthy additions.  I haven't cooked them away from home but they hold up well while backpacking if you just gotta have a biscuit.

Whole Wheat Biscuits

2 cups of Whole wheat Flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

¼ cup shortening

½ to ¾ cup of milk

Combine first three ingredients, cut shortening into flour, add milk, stir.

Turn onto a floured surface.  Roll out to ½ inch thickness and cut out with biscuit cutter.

Cook at 500 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes.

"It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it while you can, while it is still there. So go out there and hunt and fish and mess around.  Ramble out yonder, explore the forests, encounter the grizz, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air. Sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, that lovely, mysterious and awesome space.  I promise you this one sweet victory, over those deskbound people with their hearts in a safe deposit box and their eyes hypnotized by calculators. : you will outlive the bastards." I have a Country Living Grain Mill and mill my own wheat flour, spelt flour, bean flour, coffee and corn meal from both yellow and blue Indian corn.

Whole grains make a HUGE difference in the taste and nutritional content of food. Freshly milled grains make an even bigger difference.

Something as simple as homemade whole wheat tortillas are extremely filling and satisfying when made at home from fresh grains. They pack great for camping trips as well.

You should try making No Knead Bread  from whole wheat flour. It's unbelievably easy. Costs a few pennies a loaf and is better than store bought stuff.
