Interesting story.  He's done what all of us wish we could do.

"It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it while you can, while it is still there. So go out there and hunt and fish and mess around.  Ramble out yonder, explore the forests, encounter the grizz, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air. Sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, that lovely, mysterious and awesome space.  I promise you this one sweet victory, over those deskbound people with their hearts in a safe deposit box and their eyes hypnotized by calculators. : you will outlive the bastards." Awsome story. It's sad that we fill our plate with so much that we can't salvage time to do those things we always wish we could participate in. Thanks Uncle Wayne for finding this story. Carl W.

Favorite Trail: I tend to like trails that are upward, steep, and have water on top.

Yeah, Steve, his buddy mentioned in the article, picked him up and brought him back to B'ham.

Yep, he  well, er...   I was picked up at Henry Neely Dam by Steve DeBoalts around noon after spending the night about 4 miles upriver.  I mention that because not only did I go down the 631 mile ASRT and up the ASRT, like Forest Gump, I turned around and travelled...  well, southwestward for another 80 miles.

Steve brought his pickup truck and we put some of my 16 foot yak in the 4 foot bed, leaving a fair amount over hanging.  But the yak weighs in at only 75 lbs so I moved all of the gear to the front end as counter balance and tied the tail to the bed so it couldn't swing when we made turns.  The ride was about 10 miles from the dam to another friend who lives west of Ragland.  The boat is resting there until I come up with another adventure in the spring.

This posting being the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, I intend to start a thru-hike of the AL Pinhoti trail next Wednesday - weather permitting.  I thru-hiked it and the GA section in March of '08 during my AL-ME Appalachian hike. I have friend that wants to test herself before she gets any older.  I may have bitten off more than I can handle this time because I told her that I would carry everything but her girly stuff and sleeping bag.  Her pack weight, today, is 13 lbs.  Mine – I don’t know, this weekend I’ll be shopping for a bigger pack – my 3800 ci ain’t getting it done.

Hopefully I can post a picture of my yak loaded in the back of Steve’s truck.
