Just curious to know if there are any restrictions on hammock hanging. Let's say I want to use it in a National Park such as GSMNP, have restrictions been imposed on the use of these devices in such environments? Happy Trails!     HopAlong Rob

I did 60+ miles in GSMNP in October, and did not find any restrictions.  From other hammockers, I have found that those locations that are opposed to them are usually just misinformed about them.  As long as you are using a wide strap (and not a round cord) to attach to the trees, there is not damage.  Using round cordage will cut into the bark of most trees.  Using webbing disperses the weight, eliminating damage.  If ever questioned by "authorities" this is usually explained (in a nice manner) and then they "get it."

I would be willing to reason that hammocks have less impact on location than tents. I mean it is not at all hard to spot a site where hundreds of people have put their tent because it is a nice rootless flat area. There are only so many spot's like that.
It would be nice if we could get some opinion from Leave No Trace about this.

Anybody have any buddies in that organization?

Hammock hanging is widely supported by Leave no Trace as long as it is done properly. As with everything there are good ways and bad ways of hanging.
Just a few :
Use flat wide straps
Don't hang in delicate foliage areas
don't hang from a tree of too small size
Plan ahead for areas with no support for hanging (no trees)
Follow all rules,no exceptions sure they may sound dumb or harsh but next time you encounter this same official you may get to explain why you should be allowed to do this.
Move from place to place after a day to prevent foot paths and trampled fauna .
Above all use common sense and be safe.
If you feel you need to teach hanging is better than tent camping or how you would make it better, please attend a local Leave no Trace class and become a trainer or better a master trainer in your area.
