I got a letter from the FS this past week that says the public comment time ends on December 14th.  If you have a thought on the location or environmental impact or whatever, you have until then to be heard.  The new bridge will be located approximately half way between the existing bridge and the junction of Capsey creek with Brushy.  Once the new bridge is in place, the road leading to and away from the old bridge and the bridge itself will be removed.  As I understand it the new bridge will span the creek from bank to bank and as such, the structure will not be impacted by flood waters as the old one is now.  This will make it at least as high as the one across Borden Creek or the "curved or crooked bridge" as most know it.

A couple of small issues to the new bridge will be the loss of the parking area for a hike to Sougahoagdee falls, (but parking will take care of itself after awhile. The hike will be about  4 tenths mile farther now round trip).

The greatest impact will  be on canoeing.  After a monsoon rain or prolonged wet weather, the old bridge served as a dam of sorts and held the water level up for a canoe ride down Brushy from the lake.

So they are really going to build the bridge.. I thought it was just another one of their crazy ideas when we saw the "proposed bridge" markers.

Do you remember how high the bank is where we saw the stake?  That's going to be one high bridge.

The letter said this was "alternative proposal 3".  The original  proposal called for replacing the bridge in the location where it is now but was rejected because doing so would create undue hardship on the people who use that road daily during the 4 month construction period.  I don't know what proposal 2 was.

Proposal 3 allows the use of the existing road and bridge while the new bridge is constructed.  So at least it appears they considered the impact on the local population which is a change for the better in the thought process of the FS, imo.

Take care Pully, tell mom and dad I said hello.

Hmmm....if they just take out the old bridge, maybe the dead end road will offer better parking at the trail head.

I'm torn, because I don't really want to see them build a new road. However, that bridge IS deficient and does interfere with the flow of the creek. That is good for canoes but bad in a number of other ways. It is also dangerous, because you have that blind turn into an un-guardrailed one-lane bridge.

I don't know if any of you have been in this area lately but work on the new bridge is underway. They chose a bad time to begin working on the bridge with all the rain we've been having. It looked bad last week.

Pully,

Thanks for that update. I've been meaning to get back out there and check it out.  Which side did they start on?

They were just bulldozing the area on both sides of Brushy making way for the bridge not the actual bridge construction as of January 7th.

So, is the old bridge still open while the new one is being constructed?

Yes, that was the original plan.
