I was trying to figure out where the pointer should be to get the coordinates from Google Earth.

Right click on the spot you want the coordinates for then select What's Here? and it will put a green arrow there. Mouse over that arrow or look in the search field and your numbers will be there!

Note that, in Google Maps, the procedure is the same. However, Google Maps occasionally gets confused when you do this, and while the coordinates often end up what you indended, the indication on the screen does not.

Hmmmm, when I right click in google earth there is no "whats here" available.

Whoops, I thought you asked about Google Maps, in Google Earth, click on the yellow push pin button on that tool bar above the map. It will give you coords for where ever you put a pin in.
