A Funny story

We opened presents a little early this year and I did get Matt the NeoAir. But! I actually got Matt the Granite Gear Vapor Day pack he wanted and he got me the GG Gorilla Pack. Smiles all around until I snapped the GG pack into place. Something was slightly off. Was it the wrong size? No, the tape measure and size chart say it should fit. Is it the fact that it isn't loaded up yet? (Matt quickly fills pack with gear) No  Huh?  Well, what was wrong with it? The straps. They cut in on the sides of my, uh, chest in a very chaffy way. And if that could have been worked around all would have been well, but the sternum strap was way too low and squashed everything sideways to maximize nippular chaffing experience. Matt, supportive husband that his is, seeing my present turn into a colossal mistake puts on the pack to show that it isn't me, the pack must be defective! Well the pack looked like it was made for him. It hugged him! It caressed him! My pack had chosen my husbands back over mine! Fine! I'd show them! I googled ultralight women's packs. It turns out there are no packs under 2 lbs for women in existence, the lightest one on the market is the one I own. So I did what any girl would do! I had a very feminine meltdown. Matt tried to make me happy with smartwool socks with little pastel skulls woven into them and I put on a wan smile to try to make the best of the fact that the pack I had gotten him was going back and the pack he had gotten me was taking a lateral, and slightly vertical, move. Two days later and while we are doing Chrismas Eve with his parents a mysterious gift arrives from "Santa". All eyes on me as I open the wrapping and ask for a pen knife to cut through the tape. Matt quietly warns me to be careful with the knife. I crack the box open and see a nice turtle fur hat crowing a mass of brown paper. I shuffle the paper and come across a hard strange lump! With my tiny fingers finally finding something to grip I haul this black cylinder out of the box. There it is. The small tag I know and love from my own small black bag at home. Marmot. Tears in my eyes (again!) I look at Matt who shrugs his shoulders and says "I was determined to take your pack weight down one way or another." In addition to a titanium LMF Sporfle and the turtle fur beanie I got a 15 deg, 850 down fill Marmot Women's Helium sleeping bag. Happy Trails ya'll.

After hearing my story about losing a sentimental knife in Sipsey, I ended up with 4 knives for Christmas, and a book I'd been wanting.

I got a new camera, I took over 200 photos this weekend while hiking the Chinabee, and most of the surrounding  trails at Cheaha.

How was Cheaha Falls flowing?

Cheaha falls was flowing good, this was my first time there though. It was cold crossing it. I am trying to post some pics, but they are too large, over 2054 kb(I tried to crop still no luck). I have a nice pic of a paw print larger than my hand by a stream, I think it was a mountain lion.

Great pics luke724! I like your hiking buddy, but I am biased. It's always fun to try out new gear. Matt and I are going out this New Years for testing purposes. After a superb week holiday-ing with family we are ready to enjoy the new year with some friends.

Bearleader67, the haversack kind of reminds me of the Boy Scout Yucca Pack that my mom gave me when I was a scout back in the 60's.  Brings back many many fond memories!  Thanks for sharing the picture.

Among others, got some new waterproof boots to supplement my current more rough terrain boots, and a pair of rubber boots for even wetter climates. I'm ready for waterfall and wildflower hunting this coming year! Also got a GPS for the car, since the PN-40 is somewhat small for automotive navigation. Wink

I added to my gear with some much needed upgrades for Christmas.
New pack- Osprey Aether 70
New bag- Western Mountaineering 15* down
New tent- MSR Hubba Hubba HP

I am feeling a bit greedy  Embarrassed but I have worked hard and saved for some time for these upgrades which allowed me to trim some weight off of my previous gear weight. Now I just gotta' get out and use it. Happy Trails........

Hard to give me what I need most, TIME to explore, so I settled for a new pair of wool socks, and I could consider a pair of Gore-Tex hiking shoes bought earlier as Christmas too, as far as my backpacking gear goes.

I got the Garmin Colorado 400t I had been wanting! I've been geocaching like crazy ever since.

Best part was I got to spend the day with my folks and my brother and sister. We always have good Christmas'.

My oldest daughter surprised me with a Katahdin Vario Water Filter and an Eagles Nest Hammock!  I now need to get a rainfly for the hammock and something to use to hang it from trees...

My wife and I both received new 20 degree down bags. On Christmas night I gave them a test drive by sleeping on the back porch while the weather was in the 25ish range. They passed the test.

I ended 2009 a little on the greedy side.   Evil  4X4, bluetooth wireless, backup camera & sonar, satellite radio, 6-disc in-dash CD changer and sub-woofer.  The floating on-dash compass is my favorite.  Happy Trails indeed...
