I've never met a person who knew more about Alabama's rocks than this man.  I highly recommend visiting his personal Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve, as well as picking up a copy of his book Lost Worlds in Alabama Rocks:

=================================================
Geology hike in the Bankhead National Forest (AL) with Dr. Jim Lacefield
Saturday, February 6, 2010
9:30 a.m.

All ages and donations are welcome.

In winter, the bone-structure of a landscape becomes visible, making it a perfect time to explore the geology of a place.

On Saturday, February 6, Dr. Jim Lacefield and Wild South staff will lead a two-part hike in the Bankhead National Forest to places of geological interest.  Sandstone bluffs and canyons, limestone glades and fossils are some of the features that will be explored.  Dr. Lacefield will reveal the stories in the rocks and teach us how this beautiful part of the Warrior Mountains came to be.

Dr. Jim Lacefield is a rertired adjunct professor of Earth Sciences, University of North Alabama and is the author of Lost Worlds in Alabama Rocks.  He and his wife, Faye, own Cane Creek Preserve in Colbert County, Alabama.

We are still working out the details of this hike, such as specific destinations and levels of challenge, so more info will soon be on it's way.

Bring:  Lunch, snacks, drinking water.  You may also want a walking stick, notebook and pen, camera.

Dress in layers for warmth and bring rain gear if rain is in the forecast.  Shoes:  Hiking boots or sneakers with good tread for slippery, steep, rocky terrain.  Wool socks are recommended.

After signing up, meet at the Warrior Mountains Trading Company in Wren, Alabama (11312 AL Hwy. 33, Moulton, AL) at 9:30 a.m.  Park on the south end of the building and come into the store.  We will meet at the tables in the center of the store for a brief chat before we carpool to our first site.

To sign up or ask questions, contact janice@wildsouth.org or call 256-974-6166.  Please include your phone number in your message.
