Shoe Inserts?
«
on:

Merrell hiking shoes fit my feet almost perfectly and I've never had any problems with blisters, comfort, etc. However, I would like a more firm pad/insole between my feet and
rocks
.
Is there an insert for hiking shoes that would firm up a pair of Merrells ?

Most footbed inserts (Montrail & Superfeet) are made to correct pronation and supination, and soften the footstep. I dont know of any that would have a solid footbed to firm up the bottom.
Having had many Merrells, I can say that while they fit properly, they are very uncomfortable on my feet after only a few miles. Ive learned that I will pay more for a higher quality shoe for backpacking. My feet got me in the woods, and they have to get me out. I must treat them with the utmost care...

Which brands of shoes? (I think thats what youre asking...?)
Most others...
What style are you looking for? Trailrunners? Boots?
I like Garmont, some Vasque models, Scarpa trailrunners, TNF Hedgehog, Salomon XT Wings, Oboz...
It all depends on YOUR foot. I can tell you what works for me, but that does not mean they will work for you... You have to try them all on! It may take hours, but you will find that 'one' that works for you.
Also, you should be trying on shoes towards the end of the day, when your feet have been used and walked on all day. They will be a bit more swollen than when they are when you first wake up. This gets you a better fit simulating swollen feet from hiking. You dont want a shoe that fits in the morning but becomes too snug by lunchtime...
And be sure to try on the footwear with socks that are typical of what you wear while hiking. Obviously trying on with thin dress socks could cause problems. (Unless thats what you wear hiking!)
