We are planning a trip Feb 5-7 to the Caney Creek Area. We will be leaving Fri after work and camping near the Borden Creek TH Fri night (just because I know where campsites are to set up during the dark, let me know if there are some camp sites close to The Caney Creek area) We plan on waking up fairly early and explorer around the Caney Creek area and camp there Sat night and then head home Sun.
So far it will be:
Josh
Beth (my wife is a maybe depending on weather)
Greg
Melissa (Greg's wife is a maybe depending on weather)
Paul
Stephanie
Warren
Adam W (maybe)

I took notice of a fire ring right above caney creek falls when I did the ice hike in January. However, there's a sign about midway from the 'trailhead' to the falls that sort of suggest they don't want people doing that. The section that's clear cut right around where that sign is is fairly flat, though, and probably would suffice for an over nighter.

If that area is personal property or they do not want anyone camping near there we can camp somewhere else i guess.

I don't think that area is private property, but private property is crossed when accessing the area and is VERY close to that fire ring. Personally, I would prefer if folks wouldn't camp there, because the area gets enough visitation, but hey, I have no authority.
I would just camp at Borden or Brushy, personally.
I may meet up with y'all that weekend if you give me an idea on where you will be on what day.

My main beef with these campsites is the continued negligence of people at leaving glass, tin cans and tin foil in and around the fire pit. I try to pack out what I can when I come across these places. A few years ago, while walking the sipsey river trail, i came across a group of very angry hikers at fall creek falls. someone tripped, and what they'd tripped on were 3 bags of trash some idiot buried there. There were at least 3 of those camp stove canister things, one of which rolled off and into the river before I could grab it. They had also established a crap hole in some brush less than 5ft from the river bank. The NERVE of people. That's actually the last time I've seen fall creek falls. It's overused and abused.

Looks like we will make it a day hike and camp somewhere else. Don't want to disturb the area any more than it is.

Brushy is getting a bit too crowded these days for me. Besides We're all pretty able to get out there a bit. Anybody for just meeting at Ship Rock. There are plenty of sites there and it is a couple of mile out.
My other suggestion would be for a change of venue to Cheaha Wilderness and meeting at the Turnipseed Hunters camp or the shelter on Chinnabee or even just Cheaha SP.

Doesn't matter, there are tons of campsites around ship rock that could be possible. Probably better since it would be less crowded. It will be late Fri night when we get there we all get off around 5.
I have never been to Cheaha so that might be possible.

Matt looks like Sipsey, talked it over with Greg. I guess we need to figure out a place to Camp Fri and Sat Night. Another Idea would be above Fall Creek Falls. But I am up for anything as long as we go ill be happy.

Hey weathermansam, along those lines -- how about those 3 firerings we destroyed in East Bee Branch the other weekend? The nerve of people to build fire rings in that environmentally sensitive canyon! One of them was within 10 feet of the big tree. The stupidity of some people is monumental. It offends me that we must share air with these imbeciles.

Since you're driving as far as you are, arriving after dark and the main plan is to visit Caney Creek, I'd camp somewhere along the Payne Creek trail that has just been established. After you cross Sipsey River bridge going north on HWY 33, watch for a pull off on the right side of the highway after you reach the top of the hill. Seems like there's a NF sign welcoming you to BNF in that area. The trail head starts there and winds down hill to Payne Creek. Several good places to camp and less than a half mile from the vehicle. One huge bluff shelter to your right once you reach creek side. I've never been down there in the dark but late September the trail was in very good shape and easy to walk.
The main advantage to this campsite is it's not over used and it's within 3 miles or so of your chosen destination, Caney Creek and the beautiful falls that just happen to be on it. They should be spectacular if we get the rain they are forecasting.
Let's keep this between us, OK?

Sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, that lovely, mysterious and awesome space. I promise you this one sweet victory, over those deskbound people with their hearts in a safe deposit box and their eyes hypnotized by calculators. : you will outlive the bastards." Ed Abbey

I assume you've been down Arnold Motorway to the upper Quillan camp site? IMHO, the best combination of nice and easy to get to.

This is a "personal favorite" at Buck's Pocket State Park:
Caney Creek Feb 5-7
I half expect someone to have built a fire ring or two back next to the big tree in East Bee by the next time I see the place.
