Hiked out to the Cabin in Sipsey on Sunday last via Trail 201 from Cranal Rd. parking.  Trail was in really good shape.  Not too much deadfall and what is still there has well-established detours around it now.  Found the cabin in really good shape.  One of the windows had been left pushed open  several inches but it didn't appear any critters had been inside.  Very little trash, but we packed out what was there.  It's been about 3 years since we made the visit to the cabin and it was very trashy last time we were there.  Looks like folks are doing a much better job keeping it cleaned up.  Sat around there for awhile going thru the visitor journal.  Looks like a pretty big group was there the end of January for an overnight.  Round trip was about 5.3 miles.  Sleeting a little when we hit the trail at 10 a.m., stayed overcast the whole time.  Temp never got above about 35 deg.

I originally titled this as "Riddle Cabin" because that is what I was told it was called many years ago.  However, I see in another forum post that it is Ripley (or Rippey) cabin.  Well, whatever it is, that's where we went, windmill and all!

I've always wondered why it's called a "cabin" when it's made out of 8" concrete blocks. Glad it was cleaner this time.  Like you, the last time we were there it was trashed so much we couldn't carry all of it out with us.

So go out there and hunt and fish and mess around.  Ramble out yonder, explore the forests, encounter the grizz, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air. Sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, that lovely, mysterious and awesome space.  I promise you this one sweet victory, over those deskbound people with their hearts in a safe deposit box and their eyes hypnotized by calculators. : you will outlive the bastards." Yeah, a cabin it ain't!  First time a buddy told me about it, he failed to actually describe it. That trip we came up from Sipsey.  Imagine my surprise when we got up the gully and I see the windmill and then....a cinderblock building.  :-)  But, I guess it's the "spirit" of the thing.  And like you, on our previous trip we packed out a big bag full of garbage and that just barely made a dint in it.  But this past weekend it was good.  Very clean.  Very good shape.  Made me happy and proud!

I do believe this will be one of my goals to find this year. I have been in that vicinity numerous times, but just haven't found it.

Excellent.

I'm going to attempt to find the Rippey Cabin this weekend and thought I'd throw in this satellite photo that clearly shows the cabin and its relation to the headwaters of the Sipsey Fork:

Was at the cabin on Sat. The top of the windmill is now on the ground.

Wow!!  We were up there about May of last year, just before it got too hot and "buggie" to hike that area.  That's a bummer!!!

Did you notice why it was on the ground?

It is my understanding that people were trying to drop a dead tree that they thought was going to fall on the cabin. but it fell on the windmill instead.
When I was there last fall the tree was on he windmill but the top was still in place.

Were they trying to drop it on the cabin?

Just wow, freakin' idiots.  I've changed my viewpoint.  We should be allowed to shoot idiots in the woods.  No bag limit.

Sam, I think he means that  the tree was going to fall on the cabin if it wasn't cut down. Wink

I would have happily provided rope and an ax to help steer the other way.
