The nearest place in Alabama to go would be the Conecuh Trail in the Conecuh National Forest.  It is a beautiful area and the trail can be done in a dayhike or broken up into an overnight trip.

Another option would be the Black Creek Trail in the DeSoto National Forest in Mississippi.  You could also do sections of the Florida Trail in the Blackwater State Forest.

Plans for a long backpacking trail in south Alabama are in the works.  There are currently deals being made with the cities of Orange Beach and Gulf Shores as well as Gulf State Park, Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, and Fort Morgan State Historic Site.  Also, look for some news out of the Perdido Wildlife Management Area.

The Jackson Red Ground Trail east of P-cola is a good overnighter, it is a one way 20 mile + trail.

*shakes head* Pay no attention to those sending you north. You can hike and camp in the Chickasabouge Park right here in Pritchard/Saraland. And over in Baldwin County you can also hike and camp at Blakley. There are a number of trails over there. But with the river up you had better have a pair of gortex boots. Blakley is a state park as is Gulf State. Gulf State has a really good paved trail and a few around the campground. You can also go to Fort Morgan at the end of the Peninsula in Baldwin county for some history.

Those places are great for dayhiking but you cannot camp on any of those trails.  As of right now there are no places to backpack in Mobile and Baldwin counties.
