I'm trying to time out my wildflower hiking this spring. Anybody seen trout lilies in bloom so far this year? Anything else?

I'm expecting a late spring, considering our record cold winter, at least here in TN.

Well, as luck would have it -- this is a sampling of what I found today (3/7/10) in the Talladega National Forest.  This same population has bloomed as early as the last weekend in January, so this is quite late for them.  Sipsey is usually about a month behind these guys.

Nothing in the white creek/thompson creek/eye of the needle area in Bankhead.  Not sure if they were prevalent there to begin with....there were some tiny pink and lavender flowers scattered here and there, but I'm not sure what they were.

We're already having spring weather here. I'm expecting a fairly normal spring. That doesn't mean there won't be any more frost, but that's Alabama fer ya'.

Jay,

That is what I was afraid of... The winter was so harsh it pushed back spring regardless of how warm it is now. That may screw up my whole schedule.

I was expecting trout lilies to be everywhere in Talladega by now, but you are right, I've seen them as early as very late January or early February at two locations in Talladega. They tend to linger, however, so not knowing when they started makes it hard to predict.

Sam,

I've never been in that area when they were out, so I don't know either.

bellaleo,

Now that is a more seasonal appearance. I cannot find my photos, but I think this is around when I normally saw them on the silent trail.
