Only one more week to go!

One more week and one of the best trips that I will have ever been on will be here!!! After 2-3 years of not being able to get out to do some serious hiking I will be taking my two sons (10, 17 yrs old) on their first over night trip. We are looking at 3 days on the Pinhoti starting at Bulls Gap, trying out some new gear and just having some good times on the trail. Will post about it when we get back and If you are in the area look us up.

Good Luck, I know ya'll will have a good time.
I'd be interested to know how you're ten year old holds up. I take my son occasionally but he is only nine. 5 miles is about all I can get out of him. He is usually raring to go the first two miles, a bit subdued the third, actively complaining the fourth. He only weighs 62 pounds so it is difficult to get him to carry much more than one extra set of clothes and a sleeping bag. I typically carry his pack for a mile or so to keep him fresh.

Have a great time. Always good to get out with family!
Just be aware that there is little to no water for the first 12 miles heading north from Bull Gap. For myself, I carried a gallon to get me to the fire tower on Horn, dinner, breakfast and a couple miles down to the next water the following day...

I know what you mean todd, we generally hike 3-5 miles round trip, we went to sipsey back in Jan 2009 and hiked trail 201 down to the stream where you cross to meet trail 206 and then followed/bushwacked back around to where 209 connects to 201. He was really good all the way there and did ok coming back but the last mile or two gave him the most trouble. We are going to take our time on the trail, hope to be at the trail head by 6:30 am so that we have plenty of time to make it to the Horn Mtn shelter(hopefully). If we do then we'll set up camp and the next day will be spent exploring, may try to hike to Scott lake. The third day will be packing up and heading back out, plan on taking 2 70oz camelback, 1 100oz camelback and 2 32oz water bottles, there supposed to be some rain between now and then so maybe there will be a few streams along the way if needed.
