Was wondering if anyone has hiked in the Mountain Longleaf National Wildlife Refuge that is near Fort McClellan.  The web site for it does not say much.  Are the trials nice? Does anyone have a map of the trails? Is the area safe for a lone hiker? It is vary near my home and I am wishing to plan a day trip out there.

Thanks Bella

Just checked Jacksonville State University's website, as there used to be a page dedicated to the refuge on the EPIC [environmental policy and information center] website there, but it seems to have been taken down.  This is the only map I know of the area:  http://upload.wikimedia.o...untainLongleafNWR-map.gif  The "trails" are essentially old roads.  I've not been here personally, but I'd like to eventually.

I looked into it a few years ago but was unable to find much information about it. It is fairly new, and the NWR's often have spotty to no information floating around about them. What little I found out is basically what Sam has said.

I would contact the servicing NWR office and see what they can provide in terms of information.

See for a discussion of the trail conditions: http://www.alatrails.com/...dex.php/topic,1109.0.html

Turns out the servicing NWR office is the Mountain Longleaf NWR office.

thanks for the link.  looks like some exploring is in order.  gonna be great when the rest of the land opens up. kind of neat how the longleaf pines are doing good because of the troops blowing up the woods .  the tree needs fire to live and the bombs set the woods on fire.
