If you haven't been to this special place near Tuscumbia, I can highly recommend it.  The owners are about as nice as they come.  And, it's FREE!!!!!!!

Anyone up for a trip there tomorrow? It's only about 18 miles from where I live.

Pully,

I'm already scheduled to visit later this month. Otherwise I'd be thrilled to go this weekend. I'll be in the Big South Fork/Standing Stone SP area tomorrow. Won't be back in Alabama until next weekend, unless I get word that orchids be a bloomin' around those parts.

The Lacefields said they expected Fridays and Saturdays to be pretty busy this month, just as a heads up. I'm planning on visiting on a Sunday.

I may end up going there anyway. It's been a couple weeks since I've been hiking.

Big South Fork is great. I'd love to spend a week there hiking off-trail. If you plan on going to the Twin Arches be sure you're not afraid of heights and steep stairs unless you take the long way around.

Unfortunately that is where I am going for at least a little while, but luckily the plants I'm visiting are ABOVE the "stairs." Wink

PM me if you know of a better wildflower location in BSF.

If you go to Cane Creek Preserve go early. When we went in '08 we almost ran out of daylight! Way too interesting for one day.

I took my girlfriend to Cane Creek Preserve yesterday. We didn't get started until around 1 but got back to my place at 3:30. I didn't want to take her on a long hike so we did a short loop. Started at the "small point" and took the Waterfall Trail to the Ridgetop Trail to "The Point". Then hiked the Rim Trail to the South Boundary Road and followed it to the East Creek Trail up to the Boulder Garden and then took the the "steep trail" back to The Point. The Point holds an excellent view of the canyon. We watched some hawks fighting each other while buzzards were flying above them.

Girlfriend, eh?  Now we see why you haven't been hiking for a few weeks........  Wink

The photos are great.  Make me want to go back.  I've never seen a Bird's Foot violet with coloration like the one in your photo.  Every petal is usually the same color.

I've never seen a Birdfoot Violet with tha that coloring, either. But, I looked it up, and apparently they can have differently colored petals.

Thanks for sharing!

Oh, by the way, your unknown flower is P-U-S-S-Y toes. The spell checker would only let me insert that word in this way.  Smiley  Those in the photo have been bloomed out a little while, hence the spikes in them.  Normally, they are smooth, like cat's feet.
