Hiking Kilts

Came across these somehow or another and thought they were awesome. How many gents want to order one and rock these on the trail Braveheart style? I bet they would be super comfy, I'm just not sure if I'm secure enough to wear one. I would be hilarious though for a 4-5 hiker group to rock all kilts. Oh how the ladies would swoon!

I'm far too affected by poison ivy to ever consider wearing a kilt properly in the woods. Wink

I do agree, it would be hilarious to see a group of kilted hikers!

Several years ago hiking Cheaha with some friends we came across a group of hikers from florida who offered us some very tasty bacon for breakfast....one of them had on a blue kilt.

Matt and I saw what we believe was a leather kilt at the Demo Days whitewater fest. It was quite bad ass. I initially found it sexy, but after some reflection I think it was the confidence that the man had to even dared to wear: (a) a kilt at all (b)leather next to the river (c)that combination paired with kayaking...Mad props to him and any man who does wear a kilt.

Now, from my own experience I will say that hiking in a skirt is actually easier than pants or a skort. You just can't always afford to be modest. Also some people might want to rethink napping on the ground at trail intersections. I may have given that boyscout a thrill, but I could have just as easily been a hairy man in a kilt at the particular moment said boyscout chose to look up to see what the commotion was all about.

I've worn kilts for years, more off-trail than on.  But on a wide, well-maintained trail such as the AT or Long Trail, I would wear one happily.  No chafing and excellent ventilation.

Sportkilt makes kilts with pockets that work decently.  They are also easily washable.

Bearpaw, I want to sport the kilt, I really do. I'm seriously thinking about ordering one. You've given me some confidence. I've wanted to sport one ever since I saw a member of the Scottish Rite sporting the whole outfit, complete with a dirk tucked neatly in his stocking and a sword dangling from his waist. I thought to myself, "Here's a man wearing a skirt and he manages to look more bad ass than everyone else around."

I think I speak or all ladies when I say kilts are SEXY. There is just something about it that makes me swoon. I have know several men who where them all the time even to work and say they are great. Good ventilation and no chafing. Not to mention there girlfriends really like to........... well best leave that to the imaginenation.

Cuffs is the only one I know that hikes in a skirt. For any others that wear a kilt or skirt, you say it's great. No chafing and the ventilation benefit. I'm just curious,,,,Commando?

I own a "belted kilt" from Scotland, and know(sort of) how to fold a "great kilt"(braveheart).  Use them sometimes when reenactment camping, but never have when hiking.  As far a going commando, I can't say that i've been brave enough, yet.  While backpacking, it seems that a kilt might snag on briars, branches, etc.  on the trail...

Absolutely.  There's no benefit (ventilation or chafe prevention) if you're wrapping the kids up in a funky sweatsock.  Might just as well wear pants.

It also lightens up your attitude to the world.  You sometimes hear "Free your mind and your a** will follow."  But when you hike in a kilt, it's the other way around.

I DO bring shorts with me on these hikes if they're going to last more than a few miles.  Better for swimming or getting a hitch to town for resupply.

Hmmm, Man in a dress? Oh, wait, women find it sexy AND bad ass.... That's incentive enough for me to accept it as masculine attire. Where can I get one?!! Just so long as I don't gotta wear fish nets with it, I'm ready to free the boys........ Evil laugh laugh

Nah, when he wants to air out, he just goes "Pooh Bear".  (i. e. t-shirt with no pants/shorts at all.)

http://www.sportkilt.com/

this is probably the best place to buy them. they are affordable 50 to 90 bucks depending on you size. they are also more traditional

http://www.utilikilts.com/

are a less traditional  look and cost a lot more but they are vary popular . cost about 190 to 600

http://usakilts.com/

this is a good site to they have all the stuff that goes with a kilt

http://rkilts.com/

sells leather and hemp kilts

http://www.atlantakilts.com

this site is really cool. they are local store where you can buy or rent kilts and all the things that go with them.
