hi fellows,

We've worked out a plan to hike starting this Sat or Sun, me and a guy from Macon, GA, on the AT  for the 95 mile section from Dick's Creek Gap, Ga to Fontana Lake below Great Smokies.  I do not read whiteblaze much so I have no idea how this will go as far as difficulty, weather this time of year, etc.  I have to be home again by Tuesday the 18th, so this gives us at least 8 full days to walk.  He is looking at the thru hikers companion, I think the plan is to drive one car to wherever there is parking near Fontana Lake and then drive the other back to the start point.

Any suggestions, like will a 30 degree sleeping bag be warm enough, would a paid hiker shuttle be quicker if there is one, will we be exhausted  trying to hike 14 miles per day for a week ?  Anybody wanna join us?  I'd say the quickest way to hike this would be to say hello to each other, exchange cars, say goodbye and drive each other's car to opposite ends then start walking toward each other and exchange keys in the middle. But then we miss out on a chance of making a good friend. I just meet him on whiteblaze.

I can't seem to get web spell check to work ! Guess I better proofread this one time;-)

I used this guy when we hiked the Smokies.  http://thehikeinn.com/

Very reasonable rates, good place to stay, offered good suggestions and was on time.  I'm not sure if he goes as far as you're going though but give him a call and see.  He is located about 2 miles (?) from Fontana Dam.

We drove there, spent the night, left our car, he shuttled us to our starting point and picked us up at Fontana Dam within 10 minutes after we called him.

"It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it while you can, while it is still there. So go out there and hunt and fish and mess around.  Ramble out yonder, explore the forests, encounter the grizz, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air. Sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, that lovely, mysterious and awesome space.  I promise you this one sweet victory, over those deskbound people with their hearts in a safe deposit box and their eyes hypnotized by calculators. : you will outlive the bastards."
