Hamburger Helper Singles!

That's right, in the Hamburger Helper isle in most stores you will find Hamburger helper singles. It already has dehydrated meat and everything.
I've been taking these things hiking with me for over 2 years. I just haven't seen them mentioned as of yet. And for half the price of a Mountain House Entree you get 4 packets (2 packets per meal) or 2 meals out of them.
Just wanted to give ya's a heads up. If your local store doesn't carry them, you can order them.
Beef Stroganoff!!! YUM!

My current personal favorite are the Knorr side dish rice packets. Take a pack of pre cooked chicken along. Twice the food for half the price as the stuff you'd find on the camping aisles.

I agree about the Knorr Rice packets. And for some variety on a several day hike, the ones with pasta are equally good but take a few minutes longer to cook.
I tried the Hamburger Helper Singles but didn't like them so much and it took 3 packs to make a meal for me. Another good side is any flavor of instant mashed potatoes that doesn't need any milk or butter added to it. But then I need some veggie from somewhere. So I've used the Bear Creek soup mixes ( you have to divide them in 3rds or 4ths to have one hiker sized serving) and then I can add extra dehy. veggie mix to that. Harmony House Foods has a good, reasonably priced, dehy. veggie soup mix.
I go with tuna and chicken still in the foil or can unless it's a long hike where I'll dehydrate that or whatever meat I have on hand .

you can make your own dehydrated veggies really easy. Buy some frozen mixed veggies and dehydrate them. I usually add a bag of blackeyed peas to it.

I'm wondering if these require boiling while cooking, or can you just add boiling water and set aside? (Either one- Hamburger Helper or Knorr)?

The knorr sides need about 6 minutes boil time, I carry a fold up sterno stove and build a twiggy fire beneath to avoid carrying/using fuel.

You can do the Hamburger Helper Singles by boiling water, pouring it in and sitting it to the side, but it goes MUCH faster actually boiling it until ready. I find two packets to be plenty as we often have hard cheese and some other things to make it a more balanced meal. These are a handy option for anyone looking for a little different flavor on the trail, and they're pretty cheap comparatively.

Make yourself a "cozy" for your pot out of 3 scrap pieces of foam, glue bottom and side together with Gorilla glue or whatever kind works. Cut a foam cover for the lid, too. I used open cell foam scraps but the closed cell stuff like sleeping pads are made out of might be a better insulator??
Then you just bring the stuff to a full boil, and put the pot in the cozy for about twice as long as the directions say to boil or simmer the pot. When I do my meals, I always find something else to do while waiting for the "simmer" time and even after 30 minutes the pot is too hot to eat without blowing on the first spoonfuls.
