I didn't know that wagons were allowed on the Bunyan Hill horse trail.     http://www.sipseywilderness.org/trails/224.html  He may not be able to ride a horse that far, but how about riding in a wagon?  That would leave what, about a mile to walk down 204?  I have climbing gear. Could give him a belay so he doesn't fall on the climb down.

That makes me think of a Rickshaw. 2-large diameter bicycle wheels,  manually pulled, comfy seat, light suspension, there you go home garage engineers. Where's the patent attorney?

$6900 for the Trailrider. I've been emailing the manufacturer this evening. A bit steep but it's made from lightweight aluminum. I've seen road bikes made of this.

I work for a nonprofit. We may be able to write this into a grant...

That would be great if you could get the grant then montysano could borrow it and we could make his father in laws dream come ture. Then others could borrow it and make there dreams come true.

I would probably just contact the forest service at double springs and see if they could drive him back there on the old roads. Last time I hiked down there I saw some tire tracks on the main trails. I think they could shave a couple of miles off of it, cause I can tell you from many experiences that getting around log jams if you take the canoe route can be very very difficult usually with steep slippery banks and it can get a little tipsey getting in and out of a canoe when there is a swift current which like the log jams, is the norm on the upper sipsey. I think the forest service would rather give you some assistance getting to the big tree than to have to send out a rescue squad.

Thanks to all for the many fine replies.  Since I posted this, my father-in-law has had some new health issues, so I now think that the trip is probably unrealistic.  We'll see how things are this spring maybe.
