12/11. Pinhoti Challenge dayhike. This month, we’ll be hiking a section of trail located in Section 13 of the Alabama Pinhoti between U.S. 278 and Salem Church Road near Piedmont. This is the 19th hike in our Pinhoti Challenge series, and gains a rating of moderate due to the distance. We’ll vary in elevation from around 900 feet to 1,200 feet. Along the 5.5 mile path, we'll hike right through old iron ore pits, across the top of Davis Mountain, past the Davis Mountain shelter built by the Alabama Trails Association, and cross Hurricane Creek on a bridge built by the ATA. This land is all privately owned, and the trail exists due to the landowner's granting of a conservation easement across his land. Logging activities frequently close this section of trail. Make sure to bring a camera. Hiking boots a necessity, as well as plenty of water and a picnic lunch. There will be an optional dinner afterwards. E-mail for meeting place and time,
jay_hudson@bellsouth.net**This section is currently undergoing some logging activities that have the trail corridor in questionable condition. We will monitor the situation and make changes as necessary.
